Legally Blonde

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but the musical "Legally Blonde" has been filmed and will air on MTV today at 1 p.m. Eastern time and at various other times in the coming days. You could check local listings for exact times.

Yes, there are some students from Tisch who were invited to dress in pink and come see it for free. My daughter went, but I understand the filming was edited from 3 different performances.

Yes, my friend Rusty is in LB so this is how i know, it was filmed 2 times without an audience and 1 time with the audience.

Anyone know why MTV was permitted to do this? I wonder if it will start a new trend. We were not able to watch it when it aired, but we videotaped it and saw it last night. I have read that the show is popular among tweens. How is it doing with college students?

NMR....can't answer your first question.

I taped it here as I was doing work and couldn't watch it when it was airing and thought maybe my D might like to see it and I could mail it to her. Well, first of all, later that night, I was sitting down to watch it with my husband and coincidentally, my D calls as she is walking to friend's apartment who was having some friends over to watch it after taping it and so it was a funny coincidence that we were about to watch it at home at that same time. One hour into watching it, the tape stopped and something had gone wrong in the taping and so I only got to see one hour of it. Talked to my D last night and she did not like the show....fluff and was disappointed in the music expecting more of the composer of Bay Boy and this music was uninspiring. My own opinion, though I only saw part was it was one of those kind of shows that has some entertainment value without much substance and the music wasn't that special to me. It did have energy and I think teens might enjoy it. It wasn't like they were not doing a good job but it wasn't like a GREAT musical. It had some fun elements. And lots of pink :D.

nmr, the reason that MTV was able to do this was because they reached a deal with the producers of LB :) It was taped over three different performances (all specially arranged and not just regular performances, and then edited for the final 'product'. I didn't see it on MTV but from what I've heard, many people who have seen the show live, particularly early on in the run, were disappointed with how it came across on tv. I don't know if it was the editing or just the obvious difference of seeing a live performance while sitting in the theatre or some just not great individual performances, or maybe a combination of those things.

We saw the show in the spring while it was still in previews, and all in our mixed age group enjoyed it tremendously. The cast was almost uniformly excellent, and this is no surprise given the number of very talented individuals with long professional resumes who are in the show. It probably has the most talented ensemble of performers currently running on Broadway (or did at that time anyway, not sure how many may have left in the interim).

The show is just plain old fun. It never pretends to be anything serious and no one should expect that, if they've seen the film. :)

From the bit I saw...i would describe it the same.....fun. Also, the talent was strong.

I agree that seeing it on TV is not like live. Like my husband kept commenting on lack of scenery but I think the shots were close up often and once in while I could see that there was some scenery but that we missed it more due to the camera close ups than if we had seen it live.

We also thought it was fun, even though the music (in my uneducated opinion!) left something to be desired. But, as you all said, the talent level was strong, without question, and a lot of it made me smile, though I kept wondering how young women in "my day" (read, the 70s) would have greeted that first number where the girls are saying, basically, that their goal in life is to find a man and make him happy. ;) (I realize it was tongue-in-cheek!) Without a doubt, the part I liked most was the Greek Chorus. And yes, we must all realize that something important is definitely lost when one watches a tape/film of a live performance.

My h and I caught it and it made us want to see the show in person next time we go to NY!

I taped it also. It was a very good show, but was anyone else annoyed by those two hosts?!? Whenever they would make a comment during a break between the scenes I wanted to shoot myself. They were sooooo boring and you could totally tell that they were just reading off of a prompt.

My favorite song was Gay or European. That was so hysterical :P

Those "hosts" are the girls from MTV's so-called reality show called "The Hills" (as in Beverly Hills.) They had almost no stage presence and very flat affect.

Wow, if they have made a living doing acting, I sure as hell can too!

I absolutely loved it!! How LB lost choreography to Spring Awakening i'll never know lol. BUT excellent show!

Hosts were terrible to say the least, and that from someone who lives in CA...we tivo-ed the show though, and were able to fast forward through their nonsensical, teleprompted rambling. Although I can understand that the musical may appear a bit "fluffy" to some, it definitely has a following; both D and I enjoyed the choreography and especially appreciated the performances of some of the supporting leads...

I really enjoyed it! I've already watched it both airings and from the tivo which I got on DVD! :) I really didn't expect to like it at all but a friend gave me the cd over the summer and I can't stop listening to it. The songs are really catchy. I didn't like it after the first listen but after a few times it really grew on me.

We loved it and D does a great impression of the hosts attempting to read. Fortunately we taped it so can just ignore them. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and was impressed with the dancing of the leads.

Well Rusty said "It was the time of our life. Literally it felt like opening night all over again."

I've seen the show live as well as the taped version. I thought it was a "fun" show; nothing deep, or anything, but the tunes are catchy. Sometimes the singers seem a bit nasal, though. Also, the woman who played the hairdresser (can't remember her name!) was FABULOUS live; on tape, she didn't sound as good; I don't know why! Also, on tape, Laura Bell Bundy looks too old for a college student. I think Kate Schindler's voice is amazing.

We tivo'd it and about 10 mins into it we erased it. L Woods looked like the actress from Mad TV Nicole Sullivan and too old.

rossji, Paulette (the hairdresser) is played by Orfeh, one of the best voices to ever set foot on a Broadway stage, and the UPS guy is played by her husband Andy Karl. :)

I didn't see the show on MTV, just live, but age is always an issue in theatre, and often on film. It's rare that young characters are played by actors who are actually the appropriate age. LBB is 26, closer to the right age than those in many roles. It's part of the suspension of disbelief. It's why Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal, reprising their original roles in Rent this summer, were such a hit. They were playing 20-somethings even though they're both close to 40.
