This thread is ridiculous - anyone deciding what makes a tattoo “good” or “okay” besides the person actually getting it, is ridiculous. One gets a tattoo because it is meaningful to them, not because someone else deems it acceptable. There are plenty of people who get tattoos that are meaningful to them other than remembering a loved one, and I don’t see why that makes the tattoo any worse.

“For instance some girl may tell you her flower tattoo represents the divine love of her grandmother. B.S. That’s not meaningful it’s just an excuse to get a tattoo and not seem like a sl??.”
How the hell would you know whether it’s meaningful to her or not? I plan to get a Red Sox tattoo in memory of my grandfather, who was a die-hard fan for his entire life and passed the obsession onto my entire family. Just because I’d rather remember him by something that he loved and shared with me instead of his name, doesn’t mean my reasoning is any less legitimate. Acting like you know the real meaning behind anyone else’s tattoo is idiotic.

I also don’t really understand the logic behind the OP, because you’re saying that aesthetically, tattoos look horrible, but it’s okay if it’s to remember a loved one. Is that mother’s name going to look less terrible by age 40 than anything else would?

And what are you talking about with legitimacy? I am not here to convince anyone. I am not speaking facts. I am giving my OPINION. How can an OPINION be illegitimate?

BTW, we definitely need more off topic threads like this. Who really wants to sit around and read about applying, chances, etc. all the time? These threads are at least entertaining and thought provoking.

FWIW, I can guarantee that women will go back to wearing floor length skirts sometime in the future. Heck, it’s still the type of clothes you will find throughout the Arabic world and Africa.

And in the Middle east, the laws are being relaxed. In Africa, many men wear skirts down to the floor as well, it’s to protect them from the elements, not because of modesty issues.

And if it’s not somewhere you can easily see it? Seriously, you make gross generalizations.

“I plan to get a Red Sox tattoo in memory of my grandfather, who was a die-hard fan for his entire life and passed the obsession onto my entire family.”

you argued that getting a tattoo for the heck of it was a waste of money; maybe validity is the better word to use but that really doesn’t matter. what I’m trying to say is that you are arguing that reasoning behind tattoos make them legitimate while tattoos for design are pointless. but I can say that your boyfriend is stupid because he is getting a tattoo of a dead dog. how is that not somehow a waste of money? do you really think there is going to be a lot of meaning behind that tat when he is 50 years old?

Maybe he’ll have like 6 different names of all the dead dogs in his life.

Are tribal tat’s and other for merely aesthetic reasons dumb? IMO, yes, but if other people want to do it… it’s their own skin, whatever.

A cross as a symbol of christian faith, a tribute to loved ones, or many other meaningful tat’s- is that dumb? absolutely not, IMO. if other people think otherwise, that’s ok, they don’t have to get one.

I hope you don’t bring this same one-track mindset to other debates. Tattoos are a matter of personal interest, there is no objective right or wrong.

I really could care less about what other people do to their bodies. Do I think a lot of tats are ugly? Yeah, definitely. But it’s not my place to tell others what they can and can’t do. And some look nice. However, I really don’t care.

And, in my opinion, there’s no difference between a tattoo for “meaningful” reasons vs. aesthetic ones. Why should a tattoo have to have deep meaning? It amazes me that people care so much about other people’s tattoos and their reasons behind getting one.

I suppose I agree with everyone else. While my personal opinions are relevant that the OP’s, I don’t look down upon people who get tatoos. If they feel compelled to do so, it doesn’t bother me, I just personally wouldn’t do it.
