Tattoos

What do you think about them? Are tattoos ever a good idea?

I've always thought they were terrible. Especially on women. A tattoo on a girl is always a huge turn-off for me. It basically is advertising in my opinion. Tats on other guys usually are good indicators that I don't want to befriend that person. I try to stay open but from experience it usually is true. Especially stupid barbed wire or tribal arm bands.

My friends and i were having discussions on this very subject and i disagree with you. I think a tatoo is fierce and bold. It shows you want to make a statement about your self so indelible that you’ve sealed it to your skin. However, this is only if its for a reason. Getting a tatoo just to get one without really caring about the meaning behind it - that’s a dumb idea.

Ok yeah, they only time I ever think its at all explainable is if it has personal meaning. However, even then I think it needs to be a serious reason like a family member that was killed or something to that extent. Not anything like a dog to represent your love of animals.

Also, think about how tattoos will look when you are 40. 60. etc. Don’t just think about the short term.

wietersway, you sound like my parents.

I’m definitely going to get one. Not sure of what yet. But I’ve been majorly drawing on myself since I was little. I love having ink on my skin.

Though, like nil desperandum said, if I can’t think of a tattoo with any real significance for it, I’m not getting one.

Hopefully I’ll have someone close to me die, so that I can have an excuse to get one!

I would never get a tattoo, but I’m fine with other people having them.

I agree.

I agree.

It’s really a persons choice, but people really need to consider if they want a Playboy Bunny on their arm when they are at age 60. Make a bumper sticker for you car, etc etc. There are plenty of other ways to “make a statement about your self.”

i have a tattoo…i got it when i was 16…i’m almost 18 now and i love it more than anything. I don’t care if i end up regretting it when i’m 80, because it made me happy now…
can’t wait to get the next one

I’m definitely not a conservative person in any respects. I don’t know, a lot of it has to do with the region you live in. In my area, pretty much anyone with a tattoo is accidentally lumped into the stupid/ignorant category. I’m really not against the concept of a tattoo. However, by getting one you will be instantly judged for the rest of your life. I also don’t want think any piece of human artwork can be more beautiful than human skin.

BTW, if you are ever thinking about getting a tattoo and need to think about what to get, don’t get it. If you ever get one it should be instinctive and something you have had in mind for a long time. Not a, “lets see what tat should I get?” type of ordeal.

I think tattoos and piercings on a guy are huge turn ons.

Like rocket6louise said, it’s about living in the moment and enjoying it.

It most likely won’t take you until you are 80 to regret it. Many women regret their tattoos when they become mothers. (especially if its a tramp stamp) The awkwardness can be pretty significant. For guys it is probably a longer period but wither way, by the time you are 50 your skin will have wrinkled and made it look horrendous.

Instant gratification is not a good way to live life.

I think its important to realize people do not reach their full development until around 25. I’d always recommend waiting until around then before making significant decisions that will be with you for life.

"I think tattoos and piercings on a guy are huge turn ons.

Like rocket6louise said, it’s about living in the moment and enjoying it."

Hilsa, you’ve made it well known that you cherish the rebellious role. That’s fine and you’re welcome to live your life however you would like. That said, we all are generally more radical in our youth. As I mentioned, I’d just encourage you to wait a bit before making lifelong decisions. Nobody wants to be 35 and unhappily living with decisions they made in the past.

Only certain people get tramp stamps. And they’re going to have horrible lives anyway.

wietersway, remember, tattoos don’t have to be big. They can be as simply as a music note on your wrist or ankle. I don’t think a mother is going to regret that. Even if they got something bigger, I don’t think it should be a big deal.

It shouldn’t be a big deal but as humans we judge people instinctively. Obviously, some tattoos are more likely to be regrettable than others. And, not all people will regret tattoos they received. However, some undoubtedly will.

I hope you don’t think I’m singling you out. =/ I always feel bad arguing with anyone because I think they think I’m mad at them, when I’m not.

Absurd. I know someone with a “tramp stamp.” Shes very educated and a nice person.

I don’t find them aesthetically pleasing, especially on women.

However, I’ve always been halfway fond of a simple, small mariner anchor on the upper arm, or an unobtrusive saying somewhere written in small font (something like גם זה יעבור), but I don’t think I’d ever get one.

edit: Wouldn’t living in the moment require ephemeral things? Tattoos seem like long term commitments.

Nah it’s cool. I’m not nerdy enough to get mad on the internetz. It’s supposed to be fun. That’s why we post on a forum isn’t it?

Hilsa, you’ve made it well known that you cherish the rebellious role.

I just read this. lolololololol. I may be liberal, but I’m not rebellious at all.

Of course tattoos are long term commitments, but you want to enjoy your youth don’t you? If you really really want a tattoo, then you should get one. Who cares when you’re 80? No one will care about you anyway. You’ll be just another old person.

*Absurd. I know someone with a “tramp stamp.” Shes very educated and a nice person. *

Ah, well, here if you have one, you’re trailer trash or just a slut.

"Ah, well, here if you have one, you’re trailer trash or just a slut. "

I suppose so. She keeps it well hidden. I’ve only seen it once.

Yeah tramp stamps are NEVER a good idea. No exceptions. They are just that. Tramp…Stamps.

BTW, Hilsa I still think you’ve got the wrong attitude. Instant gratification is sure to leave you regretting your past when you are 35. Never ignore the future.
