hehe yeah that's weighted. Unweighted (not given by school) is about 3.85. APs are given +.5, no bonuses for honor classes. Avg acceptees GPA for my school last year was 3.9 (weighted), but people get in much lower. Last year, the highest UVA reject in our school, in terms of GPA was 3.7 (weighted).

Perhaps it's because flavian has never gotten anything below a 4 on his/her AP tests and is on track for more of those high scores? UC Berkeley has been known to let in people with gpas in the 2.00 range but who also got 5's on their ap tests. But no, UCB is not UVa and it's not east coast, so if you'd like to shrug that off, no offense taken on my part. Also, maybe flavian is an absolutely phenomenal essayist?(And by asking that, it implies that indeed I do believe they read the essays of those they sent letters to)

As I've said, it's lame to compare GPAs between schools if you don't know what the schools are. We don't get any weighted bonuses for anything other than APs. That's why the transcript doesn't even bother giving unweighted grades. I'm much higher in GPA than the average UVA acceptee of my school, so I don't see what the fuss is about.

Look on the CC archives at last year's UVA board. They discuss these letters in a little more detail. They definitely are likely letters and they definitely are for people in consideration for echols/rodman.

as for the essays, i wrote one about "the day when my childhood ended", another one about the effect of sentimentalism and emotions in causing tragic incidents, and the last one about an alternative approach to combating terrorism and extremism.
