Liberal arts college with a great art department

My daughter is a junior who is excelling in sculpture. She has won some awards and her art teacher is encouraging her to apply to art schools. I am more interested in seeing her keep her options open and looking at some liberal arts colleges that have a good studio arts department. We are in the midwest, but are interested in schools in New England, Mid-Atlantic, sweeping maybe as far south as South Carolina. Smaller to mid-size school would be perfect, but if there is a larger school out there that fits the bill we would definitely consider it.

I would love to hear suggestions. She has learning disabilities and her gpa and board scores would be considered average.
Many thanks for any suggestions.

Definitely sounds like you should look at Alfred University in NY. It’s small (2,000 students) and they have a very well regarded art department (I think about a third of students are doing fine/studio art majors). Average GPA and SAT seem to match.

Definitely look at Alfred University (NY) established 1836:

2200 Undergrads, small classes, Division III Athletics, merit aid, need based aid, small charming village of Alfred, NY with very friendly people! Housing all 4 years, shuttles run to Rochester airport at peak vacation times. No Greek Life.

Alfred looks very interesting. They have some unusual offerings in the art department. Thanks and would love to hear more.

The School of Art & Design is through New York State. Alfred University is unique in that some programs are through NYS (like Art & Design & some engineering programs) and others are private: like School of Business & College of Liberal Arts.

Check the school’s website for the Cost of Attendance for OOS (out of state) tuition for the School of Art & Design. We have a child enrolled at Alfred University, I really can’t say enough good things about it!

On Saturday we will be picking up our Saxon and attending the Senior Art Show, where all the seniors display their work, pass out business cards, put out free food etc. I really feel I am at a Fine Arts Museum to see the kids’ work: Glass, Pottery, Jewelry, Costumes, Paintings, Sculpture etc. you name it, so impressive! It is quite a show!

The School of Art & Design and the School of Engineering get a lot of attention, but the School of Business & College of Liberal Arts are highly regarded as well.

I believe the “Best Value” and “Great Schools Great Prices” accolades to be very true, still under 40k/year and we have seen very little increase in tuition and our child will be a Junior next year. We have sent 4 children to 4 different colleges and I confess Alfred is probably my favorite, although I would not share that with the 3 siblings! :)

Smaller schools with strong arts departments in the midwest area to consider might be DePauw and St. Olaf. I don’t know what type of grades and test scores your daughter has but these schools might fit. I have been to both and was very impressed, maybe a little more with St. Olaf. Good luck

Skidmore is beautiful and I believe they have a thriving art dept.

She has visited Skidmore and she was impressed with the campus and the art facilities. Her scores and grades are a bit below their median range, but I think it is a possibility. Looking to add a couple more schools like this.

sapmich, this is the event I am attending on Saturday, this is the press release.

Thanks for the info. I see that Providence College in Rhode Island has some interesting programs. Can anyone give more information?
