Likelihood of UCLA Biz-Econ / Econ or UCB Political Economy

Currently 3.5 gpa at community college with 31 credits, taking 8 more this summer (for pre-reqs). I really want to have a shot at UCLA biz-econ or UCB political economy, but I got a B+ in microeconomics first sem. and a B+ in english 1B, which is a pre-req for biz-econ.

Came from a 2.2 hs. gpa (long story, which i want to tell in my app), took a gap year with loads of international work and internships, turned it around and started community college. First semester was rocky, ended with 3.45, (w/ B+ in micro), wanted to push myself for extra credits and learn from my mistakes to apply early for an OOS school, ended up earning only a 3.5 again in 18 credits.

I’m confident my gpa will improve, but i’m worried that the B+ in micro will kill me for an econ major.

Here are the stats for 2018:

UCLA pre-biz econ: 3.88-4.0
UCB pol econ: 3.7-3.93

Keeping in mind that these represent the interquartile range, I’d say that your chances are unfortunately somewhat slim, especially for UCLA. With 31 units completed and assuming you take 8+16 more units by end of fall, the max you can raise your GPA to is a 3.72. If you average a 3.8 for summer and fall semesters, your overall GPA rises to 3.63.

Do your best and definitely apply, but also explore other options if you don’t get in.
