Yeah, there isn't any distinction between OOS and IS applicants. An IS Echols scholar would have the qualifications that would allow them to get in OOS easily.

I wanted to apply to UVA and contacted a professor there to ask what he thought I could do to prepare ...basically said that I had to be so close to amazing that it isn't funny. So I did not apply there based on his way off opinion.

Not to say that the applicants and accepted kids aren't amazing. But there are plenty that are more normal than the prof lead me to believe.

Lesson: apply no matter what anyone tells you.
My friend didn't apply cause her cc told her no one gets in oos.
For all of you adults out there that are reading these postings, stop discouraging us from trying. Do you not realize how much your discouraging words stick? Who cares if we get denied. At least we tried.
I am starting to think that hs counselors just don't want to do the extra work.

Yes Cavalier, but admission is not blind to instate/out of state. In state admission rate is around 37% or so? Out of state less than 20% Worse odds than some of the Ivies, but we'll see.

NYstudent: D's stats very similar to yours. You received the likely letter? We'll continue to hope...

Cosmo, your numbers are a little bit off. The instate acceptance rate is around 50%, while the OOS rate is around 30%. It's difficult, but my no means impossible. OOS admissions ay UVA are probably like Cornell or Northwestern, while instate admissions are like Wake Forest or the University of Richmond.

Oh, and the likely letters don't all come out at once. I don't think I received mine until march 1 or so...

Cavalier,

Did you receive a phone call from an Echol Scholar as well? Are you an Echol Scholar?

No, I didn't receive the phone call. I know of people who received the phone call and the letter but were not named Echols Scholars. I have a feeling that the reason everyone doesn't receive a phone call is that they simply lack the human resources to call everyone to whom letters are sent.

Anyway, yep, I'm an Echols Scholar.

Thanks Cavalier for your responses - it's so helpful to hear from someone who is there and knows the ins and outs. We had given up hope for a likely letter, since others received them mid- Feb., but my student's stats. etc. seem to be in line with others...so we'll see :).

Cav,
Were you notified of your Echols Scholar status when you received your admission letter April 1-ish? Or were you notified earlier or later? Thanks for your patience with these questions!

I was notified oh march 15 via email. Here's the CC thread where it all went down:

Cavalier: Thanks for response re: admit stats. Where did you get the OOS rate? Hope you're right about that, as that's way better than my 18% figure, and UVA is very high on D's list. thanks for the note on dates, too, for a likely letter. There's still hope!

What is your major?

Cosmo, here's a link you might like: http://www.virginia.edu/stats&facts/

I'll probably major in economics and something else. What else? I'm not sure yet - maybe math, physics, or something else that catches my interest. I've got time, though, as I'm still a first year.

Great site Cavalier; thanks.

I received the likely letter and im OOS, but I also applied early decision and was deferred so I am kinda confused by this whole letter thing but we will see.

Good luck to everyone as they begin to hear back from colleges!

What were your stats if you don't mind posting them (this is addressed to the person who said they received a letter but was DEFERRED in the fall...or anyone else who got this letter)? So is this letter the same letter as the letter that was sent out earlier to the regular decision apps.. saying you were very well qualified/hope you consider their school in the spring etc..? Anyone else getting this letter that was deferred? I'm just confused...

Yes

I am actually really confused about this one too because if that is in fact a likely letter then I don't understand why I was not accepted during ED. I think it might have to do with the fact that UVA received my SAT scores late, but these are my basic stats for ashleylauren811:

SAT = 2340
GPA = 4.58 after first semester senior year, 4.51 before first semester
Rank = 2/200

and Im taking all AP classes currently and have always taken the hardest curriculum at my school...

Hmm, these stats are definitely likely-letter worthy. There may have indeed been some mishap in the ED process. Maybe you should ask them about this?

thats crazy! you should have been accepted ED!!! I think what UVA must have done is that being a state school they prolly gave preference to instate applicants, but kept your name on the people who would be definatley considered for Echols. I think its just a quota issue, cuz u clearly have the stats and im sure ur essays are great! Im pretty sure you're in, and will most likely recieve Echols. GL!!

danidebold, I know that you didn't have that SAT score in time for the admissions committee to see it. Maybe they weren't too impressed by your ACT score, but they thought your SAT score was too good to let go?

I don't really think that in state admission is like a Wake Forest or even a Richmond...especially when it comes to the standardized testing. State schools are much more apt to take an in state lower SAT kid who has a decent classroom record vs. a private school who is recruiting from the whole nation for all of their spots. Since there is no mandate to fill a percentage of the class with in-state students, I am sure Richmond and Wake can be more selective. The only exception might be Northern Virginia admission into UVA which is highly competitive.
