Yah cavalier302, I am thinking that might have been the reason? Do you know anyone who got this letter and DID NOT get in?

I don't mean to be a nag..but if anyone has any input at all about my post earlier tonight in this thread that would be great!!!! Also-..anyone else that was deferred also receive any recent news/letters from uva? (also..forgot to include my sat scores: 1910 total; 1240 regular)

Ashleylauren811,

I think you have a chance because you are instate, but I do think that your test scores and rank might be a little low so I think it could go either way for you.

Wait, that was a likely letter!? ARE YOU SURE!?

When do we actually find out on the online thing? Or do likely letter people get an email earlier as i heard about that before?

I have no idea about stuff w/ the likely letter etc. but I think that they say they post online decisions on our account around April 1..hope this helps! -also would be much appreciated if you would take a look at my thread I started today re: what do u think

If the letter deal is the same as it has been in previous years, people who received letters are simply in consideration for Echols Scholar status. The ones who are selected as Echols Scholars (about a third of letter receivers) will likely be notified of their admission to UVA in mid-march (as I was last year.) The purpose of the earlier notification is not only UVA's attempt to get to these "top" applicants early, but to let them know about Echols Day on the Lawn soon enough that they can make plans to attend.

Other admitted students usually find out on or around april 1...same as just about every other school...

It's great to get a likely letter. But if two-thirds of the kids with such letters do not get Echols, I think it's not such a wonderful idea to have UVa students calling the applicants and urging them to look seriously at Echols. A thing like this can backfire and leave a bad taste in the mouth if an applicant subsequently isn't admitted to Echols. Most kids know what likely letters are and, if they get one, along with a phone call from Echols the very next day, they mentally put those two in the same basket.

My son's first reaction was to assume that he'd get into Echols, since the student on the phone was very positive, urging him to look at the website and e-mail back with any questions. I've since encouraged him to read the caveats on this website and last year's thread so that he understands the phone call may not mean what it sounds like.

Hi.
I'm japanese student, and got that letter today!!
I can't believe it!!!!!!! (my stats are SAT V:550 M:660 GPA:3.9 IB:41)
Since my test scores are not so good, (even if I considered the fact that I'm Int'l student) I'm still doubtful if it is really a likely letter...
but if it is, eventhough I'm not in a competition for echols scholars it's great!!!

ohhhh schnapz! i got it today (OOS Maryland)

got it today too!!! F'burg VA

Letters are still sent out?

I didn't get one, and I'm even in-state :(

I am really hoping to get in and I'm glad that more people closer to my stats are currently getting letters.

I applied to the engineering school and I am not real sure what to think. I talked to a third year at uva who's gpa was lower than mine when accepted, but SAT's were way higher. I actually met with one of the admissions deans who was visiting a local high school, who told me not to worry about my low SATs, which relieved a lot of pressure for me. I'm still praying for a letter, but still would just like admission. I'm counting down every day until Apr 1!

Good luck all other hopefuls!

BTW I am instate

Woooohoooo!

I applied OOS to the Engineering School and got the letter.

Stats:
ACT- 32 (33 if combined)
SAT: 1490, W 730
SAT II: 710, 730, 750
AP: 10 by graduation, 4s and 5s
Ranked 5/760

Selected as Regents scholar for University of New Mexico (scholarship for room, board, tuition, fees, books, plus stipend)
I've gone to the International Science Fair and was awarded a full ride scholarship to Drexel.
I was selected as a Siemens-Westinghouse semifinalist.
I've competed in a bunch of local/regional science fairs since the 10th grade and have won most of them.
I was awarded an internship at Sandia National Laboratories, a federal nuclear research facility in Albuquerque. (I'm one of around 10 high school interns- Sandia employs around 10k people) I wrote my Siemens-Westinghouse paper based off the research I conducted during the internship.
I have a good amount of volunteering, mainly through music, which is conveyed in my essays.
I'm president of a school club and VP of church youth group.
Also have a varisty letter in Track.
I've taken Calculus II and III at a local community college.

I want to be a 'Hoo!

Jackson, I know someone with stats like yours who was accepted ED to the engineering school. He was top 5%, though. What's your rank?

BTW, it seems that the admissions office is being a bit more liberal this year with these likely letters. Maybe they're making a push for higher yield this year...or something. Last year, it seemed like the people who received letters were a bit better off stat wise...

cavalier,

my rank is 28/576, which is top 5%

I'd say you have a good shot, then. Where else did you apply?

Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University (where I got a full tuition scholarship, not including room and board), and University of Tennessee by request of my uncle (big vol fan haha).

already accepted to UT and ODU, which were backups

UVA is the toughest school I applied to.

You should have applied to a few more schools, like GA Tech and W&M.

I was really considering GA Tech, but I went to visit it last April and did not like the campus at all. I liked Tech a lot and loved C-ville, so I pretty much decided no matter where I applied, I would most likely come back to those two.
