Foggy-- schools like Yale adopted Early Action instead of Early Decision so students could apply to other schools before deciding on just one --- to decrease the stress load, supposedly. EA means newt is already accepted to Yale, but he's not obligated/bound to go, as he would have with ED. Basically Newt hasn't promised anything to Yale yet.

so 500 students are given ED letters, and around 200 were admitted ED... around 1200 spots left, is that right?

When they opened their mailboxes in December, 397 high-school seniors received the news they had all been waiting for: they were the first members of the Class of 2009.

Dartmouth will admit approximately 2000 students for the class of 09 to yeild 1070

[ul]
[]397 students have committed through ED.
[]500 likely letters will go out (these sudents will recieve an RD letter confirming their admission)
[li] Another 1103 will just get a regular RD letter[/li][/ul]

There are, what(?) 1,050 slots in the class.

400 of them are gone to the ED admits.

This leaves 650 slots.

500 of these 650 slots have been reserved for "likely" people.

If a sizeable fraction of the "likelies" enroll (as Dartmouth clearly hopes) how many slots will remain for the "regular" RD applicants and ED deferreds?

This is the interesting question.

Like Sybbie said, about 1103 slots. Not all likely applicants will enroll. To the contrary, they have more of a chance with higher stats at enrolling at rival universities than non-likely acceptees. But still, with 1070 slots and only 400 taken early, that still leaves almost 700 slots to be filled and 1600 other applicants to be accepted.

Don't get too negative, Dartmouth hasn't even accepted half (including early/likely, etc.) of all of its candidates.

Nickleby's right - those that receive likelys are getting likelys for the precise reason that Dartmouth thinks they are qualified enough to go to another comparable or "better" school, and wants to convince them to stick to D.

in other news...this has absolutely nothing to do with the thread topic whatsoever, but I figure this thread gets the most views anyway. My dad gave me a letter from College Money Matters, supposedly a scholarship service. I'm inclined to think that this is a hoax, does anyone know if it's actually legit?

I was wondering, is it true that Dartmouth has its own golf course and mountains to ski in? If so, does anyone know where I can find any pictures of it or how much it would cost to play there if I was a current student. Also, what about sports facilities such as gyms and tennis courts any of these open 24 hours?

Athletic facilities at Dartmouth;

Golf is played at the Hanover Country club

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~hccweb/

Skiiing is at the Darmouth Skiway

http://www.dartmouth.edu/~skiway/

Other atletic facilities

How many waves are left now???

Still, Byerly is right in that that they essentially pick their top choice class via ED and liklies...true, it isn't the final mix, but it is their ideal, don't you think?
Nickleby, btw, CONGRATS! See, you're going to college after all...

Dad got another alum mailing from Tuck today in the mailbox. I have these excited heart attacks when I see the return address, then I die. Think I can ask them to just hold of til this is all over?!

*** Congratualtions, Nickelby ***

i.*

yay Nickleby, that's wonderful!

Congrats, Nickelby!

Woohoo!! I got one too. Yay, Nickleby!

linseylujh, congrats, you too are worthy of college! A relief, isn't it?It just takes off so much pressure, regardless of the ultimate April decisions elsewhere.

Did you get that today? When was it dated?

Sybbie, are we in the second round here?

Ok, everyone give me an opinion here/ It will save the daily ups and downs at the mailbox. I applied online in September (RD) and got notified via the website in Feb. that my credit card pmt did not take. (My mom's card company shows a charge and reversal on the same day, so we think it may have something to do with our firewall/privacy protection not being disabled at the time...)Anyway, I promptly redid it and was assured it had gone through. That was Feb. 11, the day of the first liklies. I' thinking there's no way I'll get one cuz I'm now at the bottom of the pile and not even read yet. My stats are high---an academic "9"/high 700's on everything...do you all agree I'll most likely at the bottom of the pile and should thereby not even think about getting a likely at this point? I wish they didn't do this...(but I'd love it if I could get one!!!)

I had something very similar happen to me, except I had sent a check separate from my online app. I guess that was asking for trouble, huh? I also know someone else who had something similar happen with their credit card, so I wouldn't worry. I think they read georaphical and alphabetically, and if you solved it quickly, you're probably fine. I did just receive a likely.
, so there's hope!

I had something very similar happen to me, only with a check and an online application. I also know another kid with a credit card issue. We both got emailed like you and while my friend has not heard anything, I did get a letter,so I wouldn't worry that it threw you down to the "bottom of the pile".

how did you get 1103 be accepted RD
500 likely?
are those exact numbers?

Darmouth admits slightly over 2000 applicants ED to yelid a class of 1075 .

400 students have committed via ED.

Approximately 1600 students will be admitted RD

If 500 likely letters go out to admitted students

Approx. 1100 students will be admitted with out the benefit of a likely letter.
