Sybbie:
Byerly is a Harvard alum who has a fascination--maybe obsession--with the machinations and strategies of the admit process, especially as it relates to the maintenance of Harvard's preeminent position atop the educational hierarchy.

It is also known as the "Daily Dartmouth" as 2,100 Google links attest.

Let me get this straight...you, a Harvard alum who as far as I understand have never even been on the Dartmouth campus is going to argue with a current student, one who WRITES FOR the Dartmouth, about what its proper name is? Wow. That's a great link you have there, too, a link to the Dartmouth Medical School. They sure have a lot to do with the publication. Where are the other 2,099 links, btw? Want a hint? Here's the only link that matters:

http://www.thedartmouth.com/

Note that the url is THE DARTMOUTH. Note also the header on the top of the page: THE DARTMOUTH ONLINE. Not The Daily Dartmouth, not The Daily Dartmouth Online...THE DARTMOUTH ONLINE. Still not convinced?

This is a pdf image of the ACTUAL front page of today's issue. Show me where it is "The Daily Dartmouth."

"Weather Today: Sunny 25/2"

that's scary. i didnt realize it was THAT cold...

That's warm, actually...

Hee! I was just skiing up at Hunter in upstate NY and lost virtually all feeling in my fingers and toes...my parents were like "for someone who wants to go to Dartmouth, you might want to consider investing in some toe and hand-warmers." I was like psh! I'll get used to it...right?...i hope, lol

wait....i was thinking fahrenheit. is it centigrade?

nevermind. a high of 77ºF doesnt sound too likely. i guess 25ºF is the high.... EEEEEK

I think the folks at the Dartmouth Review like Byerly call the paper the "Daily Dartmouth". I don't mean to defend Byerly but I think he has certain fondness for Dartmouth based on his posts that I've read. I wonder where it comes from especially since he doesn't seem to like LAC's, and Dartmouth is the most LAC like school in Ivy league.

I hate reading about all of these dartmouth likely letters...I really hope I get one. Dartmouth is one of my top choices (along with that other school in williamstown, mass) and I feel like I'm being left out...

I have spent a fair amount of time at Dartmouth for many reasons, and do think highly of it. I've written letters of support to Dartmouth on behalf of applicants.

Some of these hyper-sensitive types and conspiracy theorists should just relax.

Harvard doesn't need my help to "maintain its preeminent position". That's silly stuff.

I'd like to think interesting issues such as the increasing use of "likely letters" can be discussed without getting huffy and defensive on behalf of school x or school y.

And to the poster Xanatos: please don't get apopleptic, but I have tell you that a lot of people, including me (I confess), and including many grads and current Hanoverians, refer to it as "The Daily Dartmouth", and have been doing so for years. You'll just have to grind your teeth and take it!

Byerly, I know it's a loaded question but what would you say you like most about Harvard?

quote, and including many grads and current Hanoverians, refer to it as "The Daily Dartmouth", and have been doing so for years.

All that means that like you, they have been saying calling it by the wrong name for years and have been too arrogant to accept the fact that they have been wrong about it. I think that it is really sad that the current Hanoverians feel that you need to be the voice for them.

What's wrong with calling it the daily dartmouth! Since The Dartmouth is the only daily among other papers on campus, it makes an easy reference. Let's pick a fight with Byerly on more signifincant matters. Boy I keep sound like I'm defending Byerly.

OK, but...they're wrong. I mean it doesn't bother me, I just thought you would like to be corrected about something that you are clearly wrong on so that you don't look ignorant in this matter. And I've never heard anyone on campus refer to it as "The Daily Dartmouth."

ok, I got a likely letter, but as I've noticed, there are two different letters that I have heard of.... one says something like, "there is no question that you will be admitted.." but does not mention anything about dimmensions of Dartmouth,,,, the others says "you will very likely be offered admission..." but this letter mentions all that dimmensions of dartmouth stuff.... anyone know why there are two different letters??

Don't worry about it, no matter which version of the letter you got, you will get an admissions letter on April 1.

People who got the he first letter, will still get an invitation to Dimensions in the RD letter because Dimensions are Dartmouth's admitted students Days. For the most part while stdents attending Dartmouth are a pretty self selected group, and are really informed about the school and the program. I think the school makes a point of inviting people to Dimensions, who might be on the fence about actually attending Dartmouth because for some of them Hanover is a big change and this population tends to turn down Dartmouth more if accepted to a more urban/ suburban school. Remember the school is trying to build a community and every memeber of the prospective community is not making Dartmouth their first choice, so Dartmouth wants to make sure that person has the opportunity to see firsth hand all that Darmouth has to offer.

Interesting thoughts, Sybbie.

I do live in a smaller area, and perhaps mentioned my hope for a gradual change, and I got a likely letter "without" the dimensions mentioned.

Any others?

but Nick,

you'll still go to dimensions as an admitted RD student, so that's all that matters

Does anyone know, or can anyone approximate how much of the admitted class had received likely letters. In other words, how many of those who don't receive a letter actually get in.

There are approximatley 500 likely letters mailed out with the second wave going out any day now. Third wave will be mid march. Over all Darmouth will adimit a little over 2000 students (including ED)

Newt, I thought when you apply ED/EA you cannot apply to any other colleges.
You got accepted into Yale EA but yet you also got accepted into Dartmouth(likely letter) and University of Illinois. Help a newbie here please.
