just saw you second post. The APs taken independently of your high school should impress the adcoms (I was!). Make sure to bring those up when you talk with the interviewer.

Newbry, they haven't read everyone yet, period!!! That's why they send these out in waves...as they emerge...my bet is that they generated themselves a list of everyone over 1500 SAT's whose files were complete and reviewed them. That high group offers them something: they bring up the average SAT. People who have stuff missing as of last week never made it to the pile. If you are less than 1500 and/or you were missing something, you're still in the game. Maybe even if you are above 1500--and they haven't finished that group. Take heart!

I got mine! Life is goood

" a list of everyone over 1500 SAT's"

noooooo, my 1490, so close. but i doubt theyd do something that number oriented. they probably look at every app and honestly pick the best, which usually happens to be people with higher test scores. i have faith in dartmouth, they wouldnt fall into playing that numbers game.

I dont think it is numbered based like that but I do believe that the waves are categorized. I think that this first wave is the number based one while the next one can possible be given to people with amazing extracurriculars or something like that. I dont know if this is right but thats what I think. What do you guys think about this?

well...that theory at least gives hope to those of us with less-than-stellar numbers alone.

Stan, according to A is for admission, "'one reader a' applications that have been completed by a certain date are gathered and the applicants are mailed what is known in the ivies as a 'likely letter'"

So, it seems that all one reader admits get a letter, if their app is read early enough. The rest should get them in early march, which is when the second wave is sent.

Yeah, I got a likely letter yesterday, and I applied in freaking September for regular decision!!!! So I totally believe what are you saying about letters coming in waves!

Now the rest of us have 1 1/2 months of eager checking of the mail, with a littel dissapointment each day.

Oh, well.

Anyone wanna trade a Yale likely for a Dartmouth one?

LOL! If you got a Yale likely, I'd say you DEFINITELY would get a Dartmouth one (if you applied there). I think Yale likelies are really reserved for the absolutely jaw dropping applicants - and there are VERY few of them.

Put it this way ... I got a Dartmouth likely, and while I love Dartmouth, I don't consider myself absolutely jaw dropping.

Joey

Ok, this has been posted before, but it really DOES clear up the waves issue, both that they exist and that applications are reviewed at random (although I suppose that they sometimes cheat with that rule).

Yale likelies are for recruits: minorities and athletes.

These minorities and athletes don't have to be "jaw-dropping" among the general pool at all. In fact, they almost never are. It's just that Yale want to let them know that they'll be accepted well in advance of the April common notification date.

Dartmouth sends likely letters to people they want because they're academically qualified. Yale send likely letter to people they want because they are minorities or athletes who will likely be accepted to similarly prestigious institutions.

With so many likely letters out, it makes the rest of us RDers wonder just how many applicants they'll accept later on...

I Got my likely letter Today, This Evening. I've Been Doing Cartwheels For Hours!!!!!!!!!!!

uhm...i didn't mark a "minority" box on my Y app, and the coach said I just wasn't fast enough to get a stamp on my app, so Idk why I got one. I really think its because of my essay saying I was going to give back to my school. Dartmouth didn't have a sup essay, and I actually wrote the essay with Dartmouth in mind, but I may be wrong. I don't really know why I got one.

Jblackboy,

Congratulations to you on receiving your likely letter. I hope you have an amazing time at dimensisions and you will see that"mom" (even if she is someone else's mom) was right :)

I think it might be the other way around. I am a recruited URM from Dartmouth and I got a likely letter, but Yale hasn't given me the time of day. And while I like to think of myself as academically qualified, I imagine that Dartmouth does want to lock down some URM enrollment before other schools woo me away.

jblackboy05- what are your stats?

i realized that this has probably been asked numerous times, but what exactly is a urm?
