Anyone know if likely letters have been mailed out for regular yet? I trying to gauge who else from my school might get in....

I dunno, but I never got one. (not that I am a "likely" candidate anyways)

what are likely letters???

Letters that they send out to strong applicants indicating an interest in them attending, basically an informal acceptance.

No letters for RD yet... though I have some friends who applied RD who have been invited to events for "outstanding applicants" or something like that.

I think everyone and his brother get those though....

Gee--nice way to make a person feel special!!!

Do they really send something with the "outstanding applicant" wording to everyone?

im not sure... I think they may be trying to hook people in

No they Don't. Only my smarter (real smart) friends got those, while my more average ones did not.

soo.... if we got one of these... we're basically in, as long as we don't screw up?

I wouldn't go that far, but i'd say if they consider you an "outstanding applicant" you have a better chance than average...

Got mine today (a likely letter, and also a merit scholarship finalist letter/invitation to Scholarship Day). The scholarship letter doesn't say "outstanding," so it's probably a different one than the one you're talking about. It does say that 100 people out of 9923 Regular Decision applicants got the merit finalist letter.

okay... that makes sense... we EA folks got letter about a month before decisions... thanks mallomar

Yeah I got a likely letter today saying that although official decisions come out later, they have already reviewed my application and I am an "outstanding applicant"

I got the same letter today in the mail that says you are an outstanding applicant and how they were impressed with credentials. Does it mean you will be accepted?

I got that letter too and so did 2 other people from my school district that I know of. It'd be kind of crazy to take 3 of us (out of state) but I mean, I don't think they'd say we're all "outstanding" and that they'll invite us to the Explore Carolina thing in April. Right?

aright. lets rejoice those of us who got letters: http://www.collegejournal.com/aidadmissions/newstrends/20030127-chaker.html

also, it would be ludicrous to invite us to explore carolina as the last post said

Yeah, the UNC letter I got sounds like the "likely letter" mentioned in the article that Dartmouth sends...Wow! Congrats everyone! :)

So is it safe to say that we're in? I want to visit UNC again, but lacrosse season will be in full swing in April, so I'd rather go in March. But I also don't want to go and then find out I'm rejected.

im really not comfortable saying we're in bc i dont want to build myself up, but that article, the TRANSLATION: you're in, part from a reputable staff writer from the walstreet journal makes me think we're in. did any1 go on the message board it told u to go to for "outstanding applicants" haha its just the normal unc message board which makes me feel less outstanding, but itd just be obnoxious if they said they'd invite us to Explore Carolina in APRIL after admissions r in if they werent going to accept us. it had its intended effect, im seriously considering going
