Yea, I got a likely letter in the mail today, did anyone get one?

Hah, just kidding. Anyway, does anyone know if Georgetown sends likely cards before they send out the decisions?

I have a few questions about these likely letters (and these questions don't pertain only to Gtown likely letters):

1.) What exactly are likely letters and what is their purpose? (I mean from what I understand if I send in my application and the admission officer looks it over and then he/she decided to send me an encouraging letter saying I will most likely get in.. what is the point?...why not directly tell me I am in?..it is not like they are enticing me to send in more money or something..)

2.) Who receives these likely letters? Only recruited athletes? Do academically/well-rounded applicants get these letters?

3.) Typically, for Georgetown, when are these letters mailed?

Likely letters are basically a letter that implies heavily that the university is going to accept you. I got one from UVA last year, ended up being accepted into their honors program.

As far as their purpose is concerned, there is a debate. It is believed that an applicant will be more likely to choose the school that he/she hears from first (this is debated these days).

To my knowledge, Georgetown does not send out likely letters (not academic ones anyways). Athletes may receive them.

There are no likely letters for normal Georgetown students, just Acceptance/Deferral for EA. Athletes basically have their own admission process, so I have no idea what goes on with that.
