list reasons why uconn rocks!

just thought this forum needs some life. so to boost activity, list the reasons why uconn is top choice! :)

great degree+affordability

huskymania

awesome social life

its connecticut...connecticut...

2.3 billion dollars to make storrs an actual town and make uconn better

bangin ice cream yo

i had one of the best breakfast sandwiches ever there at the co-op

There are TWO subway restaurants around campus

Tons of new buildings
Academic rise.

Uconn-great pic=worse commercial of all time. ha ha

For me, it's hell right now.

Storrs has driven me partly crazy due to extreme depression. If things don't improve; I don't know how I'm going to survive here at UConn. I want my life to get better but I don't know if it will. I could use some advice.

Unfortunately, things have turned from bad to worse to near devastating for me here. If you're a minority and you do something to get on the bad side of your minority "club" officers; they will expose you in front of everyone and spread rumors about you thereby getting you outcasted. This is especially dangerous if you're in one of the Asian Amer. center clubs where word spreads like fire. There is no real order or constitution for some of these clubs. What's scary is that I tried to reason things out with my club's main officers and they would literally; purposefully ignore every intention to resolve issues.

Instead, they defaced my reputation in front of many individuals in the club. Every day has been miserable for me here. Especially being a desi and being alone while watching the desi community party it up like no other is pure torture.

What amazes me here is how fast word travels amongst the club members and how effortlessly they step on your right to privacy.

So why should it matter since it's just a club right? No big deal right? Haha. Not if you're a minority. If you're oriental or desi; the major social life here is within the minority communities themselves. For the most part, they hang out w/ each other on campus. Most of them socialize and meet through the clubs (AASC/ISA/PCUC) activities which have members into the hundreds.

Anyways, I'm trying to socialize with the people outside the desi community and it's really hard for me right now cause like I said, minority-non-minority socializing in college isn't really that common.

For me the biggest challenge is to meet the desi community. I have not met so many of them and am wondering if I can without having to actively participate (some have told me it's possible) and go the club meetings which I don't feel comfortable in going because of the tyrannical nature of their officers.

Anyways, hopefully things better.

In the meanwhile, if you guys are uconn students:

please give me some TIPS on what there is to do on campus for fun cause I'm dyin' here from boredom.

thanks!

^

ur dying of boredom? SERIOUSLY. GET A LIFE!!!

mens basketball, womens basketball, mens soccer, womens soccer, field hockey are perennial contenders for national championships!

top notch faculty in most departments

getting a degree from uconn provides you with HUGE networking opportunities in new england.

I'm a desi (american born) but I can't stand the whole desi community thing, what with all of them making almost exclusively only desi friends and all their jokes in urdu/hindi and lots of lame, corny things and whatnot. I mean it's fine to have desi friends but for god's sake this is not india or pakistan, go out and make other friends and do other things!

back on topic:

An awesome DC++ hub, heh

I am a UConn student....believe me things will get better.....there are 15,000 students at UConn. You do not need to be around people that do not appreciate you. There are 300 somethings clubs!!! You're fine.

"I am a UConn student....believe me things will get better....."

What do you know? Ive been at UCONN three years and still have no friends.
Your optimism is completely unjustified and all the evidence seems to indicate that things are going to get worse in the future, not better.

Ah come on, if it's been three years isn't it possible that you haven't put forth enough effort?

why did you stay at uconn if you dislike it so much?
(i never met a uconn student/alum who had a negative experience with social life or social/extracurricular opportunities!!)

Yea if you don't like it here, transfer. Its not too hard. Uconn is great in every aspect I can think of, except food in dining halls. Other then that there is something for everyone if you put forth the effort.

There are always going to be socially retarded people at every school, if that is you then too bad. Don't blame the college because you lack the ability to gain any friends.

Wow. I didn't even know this thread received hits anymore.

I have to agree that most people at UConn do have a blast. It is not a bad college whatsover. Greg your case is a bit strange and I'm sorry to hear that. My situation is a bit unique. It isn't the college's fault. What happened was a result of a escalated conflicting situation. I don't think UConn is to blame for this.

Things are starting to mellow down now. I think by nature you have to be somewhat social. I don't have a problem with this, it's just some crazy s.hit happened this year but I have a feeling things will get better.

I'm new here so I'm going to give it some time before making a judgemental decision on uconn.

I can say right now the facilities are incredible and things run like butter. Profs are top notch and academics are wonderful. Maybe last semester will just be a bad dream.

Good luck all.

For future students interested in uconn:

Do not be turned off my my previous or greg's posts. UConn is a fabulous school.

The school is very diverse which is a very good thing. Minorities are quite social but tend to be rather clicky. Desi people here are very nice unless you screw with the desi biotches who run the show here. Like I said, my situation is a bit unique and things are getting better. HAha.

hey rcherry, thanks a lot for telling me to get a life. Keep in mind I'm trying to.
