Accepted into Macalester! (regular decision)

Yep, so the mail came in today- 3/17/12, although apparently it's dated 3/16/12. I live about 20 miles away from Macalester, so I probably got it a little earlier than some other people.

I'm a bit surprised it came so early, but I'm glad anyways.

Happy St. Patrick's day everyone, drive carefully!

Sure why not. I thought about dragging this out until more people showed up, but seriously, Mac’s thread is like a ghost town sometimes. Oh well, I’m actually interested myself on how I got in to Mac.

Here’s the template I’ll be using, stolen from another thread of course:

Stats:[ul]
[]ACT: 30
[]GPA: 3.9-ish weighted
[]Rank: top 10% (right on the edge actually, somewhere around 45 out of 450 students)
[]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): AP World, AP US History, AP Calc (4, 5, and a 3) and this May I’m going to take Macro, Gov, and Stats[/ul] Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: Don’t get me started. It was incredibly cheesy, and I hate how I tried too hard to be profound. Wrote about homecoming coronation, cancer, death, and writing. How can you get any more stuck up than that?
[]Teacher Recs: One from my spanish teacher which was pretty good. Another from my english teacher which I didn’t see. I imagine it was twice as good as my spanish recommendation, though, since he and I went through CIS Intro to Lit together and really got along. (what kind of bonehead asks for a recommendation from a spanish teacher and an english teacher, though? It’s like asking a recommendation from a turtle and then going around asking one from a banana. The two just do not mix.)
[]Counselor Rec: I only ever visited my counselor for schedule changes and applying to colleges. Seems like a nice guy on the few occasions I met him, though.
[]Supplementary Material: a poem I wrote went into my file.
[]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Not an athlete, not a legacy, and does the person who wrote this template seriously think it’s possible for ANY high school kid to win a Nobel Prize?
[/ul]Personal[ul]
[]Location: Minnesota
[]High School Type: Public
[]Gender: Guess
[/ul] Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars: Newspaper Club and that’s pretty much it actually. I added a few other things on my application to fluff up this section, but really, who’s gonna take “leisurely jogging” as a serious extracurricular? Apparently, Macalester.
[]Awards: I’m tempted to put down Nobel Prize
[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I do have one thing to say about applying. I was worried that not getting my mid-year report and my counselor recommendation in on time would affect my application in a serious way. But look, it turned out fine, and I got accepted. If you have that same problem, I wouldn’t really be too worried. Still undecided, though, if I’m actually gonna attend Macalester. Waiting for results from one other college.[/li][/ul]

Nice stats you’ve got there!! What do you think are the most important factors when applying to Macalester? Are the essays important? Have they set out the other decisions yet to other candidates?

Blargh, I got really excited when I saw this and I was going to wait by the mailbox, but then I remembered it’s Sunday Oh well. Hopefully the letters will arrive speedily to Georgia good luck to everyone and congrats to nearby! also, don’t be too hard on your stats, you keep trying to discredit them, almost… there’s no need to be humble, I mean, I don’t know you, but you’re probably a really cool and interesting person and my guess is that you got accepted to Mac for a good reason!

Stats:
SAT: 2190
GPA: 3.8 unweighted
Rank: 7/54
Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): Didn’t send in my AP scores (1 on Physics, anyone?) but I did send in my SAT Lit subject test (800)
Subjective
Essays: Umm…yeah…about those…
Teacher Recs: Honestly, I have no idea. I got one from my French teacher who I’ve had for six years and have always gotten along well with, and one from my English teacher who I’ve never had before this year but who has been the supervisor for a bunch of extracurriculars I’ve been in. Neither one let me see their letters, but I’m guessing at least the French one was positive.
Counselor Rec: Really good. But my counselors don’t know me at all, so I got it from the principal instead.
Supplementary Material: nope
Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Ditto what the person above me said
Personal

Extracurriculars: varsity tennis, mock trial, student government (class president, student council officer, etc.), a bunch of music stuff (band, chorus, jazz band, pep band, glee club, you get the picture), drama club, scholastic bowl, interning at the local newspaper
Awards: Nope
Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I was uber surprised to hear back so soon and was even more surprised at the VERY generous financial aid package…I’m still waiting to hear back from some of my other top schools, but Mac’s definitely an option!

So does the decision definitely come via snail mail? Because I lost my log-in information for Mac’s site and was debating whether or not to have them re-send it…

Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I don’t really know why I was put on the Alternate List because I thought I was a pretty good candidate, but maybe I just didn’t stand out enough? (Still waiting for letters from five colleges, but already accepted to two safeties: University of Illinois U-C and University of Iowa)

"Everyone should have their Admissions decision from Macalester by the end of the week. "(International students via email, US students via snail mail.)
