For those who are looking to buy Mac laptops, the 12" PowerBook and the entire iBook line was replaced today by the MacBook line.

It has a 13" screen, comes in three "trim lines", runs the Intel chip, and is pretty affordable (base model starts at $1,099). Look for good closeout deals on old models as well right now.

The biggest news is that the high end machine is black, as opposed to the traditional white case of the lower two models. It's the same glossy black as the black iPods.

I will probably get one in late 2008 or so because my AppleCare warranty will expire around then, all software will be Intel based, and the prices will have probably fallen.

Awesome. I would buy one like right now, but I never thought I'd say this: unfortunately my university provides laptops as part of tuition and there's no point in having two. I really want one though.

keep in mind that as an accepted student your are eligible for the apple educational discount. you can save $50 on the 1.8ghz duo and $100 on the 2.0ghz duos. macbook pros are $200 below retail.

ipods are also $20 (nano) to $30 (regular) off.

yes!!! I get a smaller screen(which i prefer), black, and pretty much same features as the 15" for about $550 cheaper!! thank god i didnt order that macbook pro yet

just looked through the stats and there are some pretty significant differences between macbook and macbook pro besides size... 1. The graphics processor on the macbook is completely crap so if you want to game at all then dont get it, also the memory is shared with the graphics card so your actual sdram is lower.. 2. The macbook doesnt have the ambient lighted keyboard like the pro(i thought this was important)... 3. The macbook pro is built of an aluminum alloy while the macbook is built of some kind of durable plastic.. i think its the same thing ibooks are made of maybe(i never owned an ibook)... 4.) no express card slot on the macbook....
With that said, also if your looking at the black version b/c of its larger hard drive.. you can upgrade the 2.0 ghz white version to 80gb hd and 1gb ram and it will still be slightly cheaper than the black so its not really worth it... But all in all I must admit that Apple has shocked the world and created an amazingly affordable good quality computer... affordable and apple together, who wouldve thunk it?

I LOVE that there is one is in black! It would match my ipod, but there is something wrong with charging more for the black over the white. I do not think I am going to get one because they are so expensive.

Just how bad is the new Macbook for games?

How is the new Macbook for watching DVD movies?

Does anyone know if the new Macbook comes with the same kind of shock absorbing hard drive and motion detecter hard drive lock (if dropped) that the old ibook had?

yes, new macbook has the drop motion detector thing that the ibook had.... It is perfectly fine for playing DVDs... Out of the box you wont be able to play many of the high resource new games but im pretty sure you could put in a video card if you desperately need to play some of the newer games, this is NOT a laptop for gamers

People are complaining about the firewire in the new Macbook. The Macbook has a Firewire 400 and people wish it had 800. What is Firewire 800 used for and what will we be unable to do without the 800?

The Macbook doesn't have an Expresscard slot. What is an Expresscard slot used for? What will we be missing out on?

as far as the express card slot goes... you can buy a card reader for like $20 so no big deal... as far as firewire 800 goes, ive never used one and probably wont in the next 4 years, I think its for like connecting ultra high end electronic equipment or something... basically firewire 400 will do fine for most peple

express card slots allow you to add stuff like tv tuners, memory cards, etc. to your laptop without opening it. You can buy them seperately and im pretty sure that within the next 6-12 months prices will drop to around $100
