MAE actual test

I have some questions about it, how many questions is it? How many can you miss? Is it similar to the practice question.....so how many can you miss to be placed into Calculus? Thanks Everybody!!!!!

you can miss all of them. this isn’t the sat. it’s a placement exam. if you fail, it’s a reflection of which math class you should be placed into. don’t worry about it, and don’t study for it. placement exams are meant to assess where you are so you can be placed into the class that best suits your abilities. if you study for a placement exam and put a bunch of knowledge in your short term memory, you will be placed into a class that is too difficult for you and you will end up doing poorly in that class.

What are the classes you can be placed into?

you can go to classes.ucr.edu to look for math classes. i believe you can be placed into any class depending on how well you do.

Well, I got placed into Math 22, Calculus for Business.

good for you. that’s what i got placed into for my first quarter too. wanna buy my book? lol. $90 like new.

campus bookstore price is $123.75 used and $164.75 new

Did I do well then? :stuck_out_tongue:
Umm, damn…$90?
Hmm…Maybe. (I know books are expensive but even that seems a bit much.)

cough Rivera Library Reserves… cough

Aha…Have you had this class?

you did pretty well. =] and yeah, some books are just ridiculous…but that’s the reality of it. after you enroll in classes, you can look up which books you need and campus bookstore prices here: SelectTermDept

If you ever have to take the Math 9 series (calculus) don’t bother buying the book. You almost never use it. Just buy the web assign key.

The test is almost all Algebra II and Pre-Calc. You can either get place into Math 8A, 8B, 4, 5, 22, or 9A.

9A is the hardest to get placed into - (you need to get almost a perfect).
8B is next hardest - this is because 8B is essentially 9A with just a little more review
22 and 5 are the next hardest- 22 is business calc and 5 is Pre-calc for engineering and science majors
4 is next - (its almost identical to math 5 but 4 is for humanities majors and there is just less math in general)

Im sure there is something below 4, but I forget.

im a pre-buinsess major and i got math 4  … im really confused. am i in the right class??

yes you are in the right class. math4 is a prerequisite for math22. you might be confused because you don’t see math4 on the list of your requirements…but yes, if you don’t place into math22, you have to take math 4 first. don’t worry too much about it. you’re doing fine. math 4 isnt bad. it’s bad if you’re placed into a workshop that doesnt count for units.

Ahh thank you! I was getting really worried and confused that I was in some other class.
What exactly is this class on? I personally felt I did well on the placement test. (I took Pre-Calc my junior year and AP Calc AB my senior year) so idk…How hard/easy is this class??

After I get into Math 22 how many more quarters of math am I required to take?

Also, I got placed into English 4 (which im really suprised with as well :/)
Will I be able to graduate in 4 years?? From what I heard alot of people get placed into this class as well.

Also I know a few people who got Math 5?? Do i need to take that class too??

Or after Math 4 i go to Math 22??

Whats the difference between Math 4 and 5?

No problem. I wouldve expected you to place higher as well, especially if you passed ap calc ab.

Math4 is Introduction to College Mathematics for Business and the Social Sciences
Math5 is Precalculus

They are equivalent. You definitely do not need to take both. The prereqs for math22 are “MATH005 with a grade of “C-” or better OR MATH004 with a grade of “C-” or better OR MATH008A with a grade of “C-” or better.” From what I understand, if you’re placed into one you can take the other, but most people take math4 because they offer more sections. or maybe it’s the other way around. but either way it doesnt matter. if they placed you into 4, take 4. there should be a reason for it…although im not sure what that reason is.

after you take math22 you just have to take stat48 and you’ll be done. the prereq for stat48 is cs8.

you will be able to graduate in four years. here’s the suggested two year plan: [UCR: CHASS Student Academic Affairs](http://chassstudentaffairs.ucr.edu/pre-business_program/prebus_01-2010.html) according to which you’re only one class off for your fall quarter, which isnt a big deal. and here’s the list of stuff you should finish in two years (and MUST finish before you take 100 units) http://chassstudentaffairs.ucr.edu/pre-business_program/PRBSWorksheet11F.pdf. you need to complete all that before you can apply to SoBA (school of business admin).

Ohh okay thank god! So math 4, 5 and 008A are all basically the same??

Is math 4 easy to do well in?

Oh wow, so technically I only have to take 3 quarters of math (and im done with my math requirements)? Do I have to take any calc? Correct me if I’m wrong, but from what I’ve heard my major doesnt require Multi-Variable calc, or does it?

So technically I’m right where I should be for my Math class.

What classes do u suggest I take for Fall I don’t want to overwhelm myself since I’ll be new to the whole college experience. Would you suggest I take any classes in particular to start off with?

Also now that i know where I am placed, does this mean that I will be taking Math4 and English4 in the fall?

i guess so. i havent taken any of them, so i don’t know from personal experience, but that’s my understanding. i think it should be easy enough, but again i never took it. math22 is calculus. calculus for business. i dont remember if math22 had multivariable calc…cause honestly, even though i got an A-, i didnt learn a thing. xD

whether you were placed into math4 or math22 you’re in a good place. math22 wouldve been better, but math 4 is definitely still good. you’re not behind really…just behind by like one class which isnt a huge deal.

you can take them in the fall or you can hold off til later. i recommend taking them in the fall. generally you want to take a class the quarter after you take the placement exam. im a prebusiness major and my fall quarter i took engl001A, math22, bus10, and hnpg9 (hnpg9 is only worth 2 units and for honors students and math22 is 5 units, so i had 15 units). I would recommend you take math4, engl4, bus10, and cs8. All of those are four unit classes, so that would be 16 units. 12 is the bare minimum you need in order to be considered a full time student, so you can take just three classes if you want. The reason I recommend bus10 and cs8 is that they’re both really easy, and i think it’s good to have an easy first quarter so you can get adjusted to college life. If you do take just three classes, id recommend taking math4, engl4, and perhaps one more challenging class. perhaps econ3, which i hear is harder than econ2. (3 is micro and 2 is macro, so you dont have to take 2 before 3.)

Yeah I plan on taking them in the fall so I can get them out of the way with and move on to other things. I’m not in any honors. What does Buis 10 and CS8 cover? Will it be easy to balance when it comes to studying and the work load? I don’t want to overwhelm myself my fall quarter lol. I just wanna make sure it will be easy to manage and not too stressful on me. If I can’t get those 4 classes, then is there any other class u recommend?

How are u enjoying the classes? Has it been easy/hard? Any good professors? How large are the class sizes, and how are the tests/finals?
