So I was wondering if by any chance there are some folks here who are completing the bunch of their prerequisites in Spring 2013? My major( linguistics) has no articulated per-requisites on assist.org, and so the first year at the cc I was fulfilling the IGETC and taking some classes for fun(fin accounting, interpersonal communication, etc). Now, this year, I'm taking more relevant courses: math, cs, philosophy. My major concern is that the admissions officers will look unfavorably on applicants who complete the relevant to their major classes in spring prior to transfer. Am I screwed for choosing general education classes in the first year and waiting until the second one to concentrate more on the relevant courses? I'm applying to UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCB.

" By the end of the spring term preceding fall enrollment at Berkeley,
you must complete:

1) The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, and
Foreign Language; OR
2) IGETC "

That’s from Berkeley’s assist page. In your case, what is your major? From what I know, EECS Majors hoping to transfer into Berkeley are exempt from completing the IGETC, but instead should focus on fulfilling as many pre-requisites classes articulated at their CC.

As for “most” of the “other” majors, such as in the Letters of Science, you SHOULD complete IGETC and as many lower division major requirements for your major before spring of the transfer year, so in your case just focus on completing IGETC, and your major pre-req’s, don’t worry, adcoms won’t look down upon you, even if you complete it in Spring or if you have taken other courses. Just try to finish the important classes to fulfill the IGETC. But, take into consideration that IGETC is strongly RECOMMENED, but not a REQUIREMENT in some UC’s. As for UCB it is needed, hence the “must”.

No you’re not screwed for taking GE classes your first year. The major pre-reqs aren’t absolutely necessary but of course its better to have them. Last year there were so many people with high GPA’s on this forum that were getting denied because they were taking GEs (math, english) during their last spring semester. So whatever you do just don’t leave those basice GE courses until the last semester because that will screw you for sure. I got accepted to SB, and Davis without having all prereqs done. Good luck!

Thanks guys, that comforted me a bit) I was misled in the beginning of the community college career by the general counselor’s advice “do IGETC first, and then see where you are going”. So now I’m “going” with three classes related to my major left for Spring 2013… But oh well, that’s life:)
