Does it help your chance of acceptance? What are some examples of projects that could be used?
It can help. It won’t hurt. You should submit whatever you’re passionate about.
@FRCMandy Search on You Tube. Lots of MIT maker portfolio examples on there.
@brassratter I actually disagree with that. From what I’ve heard around campus is that it’s better not to submit one unless its actually an incredible project. Other than that it doesn’t help much but can hurt your application if you glorify something not worth it.
Chris Peterson himself said it can’t hurt. Think of it this way. The portfolio gives you bonus points if it’s impressive or zero points if it’s a dud. Those students who said submitting one hurt them wouldn’t have been accepted even if they didn’t submit.
The optional MIT music portfolio is another way to enhance your application. MIT does ask a music faculty to listen to the submitted tape. A music teacher’s recommendation is part of the music portfolio.
@RoadTriptoCollege2017 I don’t think that’s the case. My maker portfolio wasn’t that impressive, but it showed creativity and passion without guidance, self-made ambition. I think this is the main benefit of a maker portfolio.
I say submit one! I honestly think my maker portfolio is what got me in! It definitely sets you apart from the majority of candidates.
