I have a Marshall interview scheduled for next Saturday but I have a few questions about the process and tips to help me feel better about the interview.

Is it okay to wear dark jeans if I'm also wearing a shirt, tie, sweater, etc.?

Typically, how long is each interview session?

What kind of questions are generally in the ballpark of some of the basic ones they ask?

Will we generally talk more about me or my interests in USC/Marshall?

I know it's a lot of questions, but I really appreciate your responses! Thank you!

Wear khakis.

Mine was about 25 minutes (for Viterbi) and the others were about the same in the room.

What kind of questions are generally in the ballpark of some of the basic ones they ask?

Why USC? Why {insert major}? What are you involved in at school? What are your interests? Any questions?

Will we generally talk more about me or my interests in USC/Marshall?

Both.

I had a Viterbi interview today and I believe yours will be similar to mine.

I just had one yesterday. Look at my post on “USC Interview” thread.
My advice would be:
Bring your resume, prepare to talk about your leadership experiences and why USC, and… prepare to talk about some current world-wide issues ;(

do most students tend to not wear suits to these interviews?

i never had one as i was a transfer but im just curious as marshall is very suit oriented :P

The interviewers will be wearing suits but most students don’t. It would be appropriate to wear one though.

I would not recommend jeans.

Somewhere it was suggested “business attire” was appropriate for interviews in a Marshall publication.

Are suits really necessary? Thank you for the responses!

roy, I do not see any posts above saying suits are necessary. The posts say jeans are inappropriate, and a suit would not be out of place. Your plan to wear a shirt and tie is a good one, just combine it with slacks or, as ICanDivideByZero suggests, khakis instead of jeans.

Khakis, nice shirt, tie, jacket optional. I’d like to think that here at SC we’re not too concerned with all the trappings of formality. Looking like a slob certainly won’t help of course.

For anybody who’s still waiting for their Marshall interview, there’s not too much to be worried about. They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable (my interviewer was Kelley Chung) and they are very easygoing. For the record, I completely blew the interview because I became so nervous as soon as I sat down that I couldn’t formulate anything intelligent out of my mouth or look her in the eye. My interviewer was very casual and patient however, so there’s nothing really to be worried about unless you get suddenly anxious, because they do their best to make the process as comfortable as possible. They are very encouraging but I’m kicking myself because I totally portrayed myself as an antisocial klutz and USC is my top choice. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to anybody else but the whole process is nothing to be worried about. Just be prepared for your responses. Good luck!

Wear a suit, first impressions count.
