Math Assessment

Did anyone that is on step 5 take their Math Assessment yet? I took it. Should anything change on AIS after I have taken the test? Thanks.

I took my math assessment. Nothing was any different that I recall.

Any reason NOT to go ahead and take the assessment now?

no! take it now. you get three chances to take it!!! and you have to wait a month between tests

Take it now. It really is not that bad. The only few things I missed were stuff from a LONG time ago that I just forgot. And like aggie said, you get 3 shots with 1 month in between each.

The engineering department has a graph showing which math you would take first based on your SAT/ACT score and the math assessment. Do any of the other majors have that type of graph? How do you find out what math class you will take first?

no other school has it that i could find. i am in the college of liberal arts and i cannot find one for my school. as for what math you will be put into, you will find out at the new student conference and they will interpret your scores for you and tell you where they think you should be placed

I’ve only seen the graph for engineering. So is that basically how they make the decision?

The engineering graph is not helpful for my D. She is a Kinesiology major (pre-physical therapy). The two math courses on her degree plan are Math 131 and 141. It would be nice if they had a little more information on line on other majors.

yeah i dont know really. just have her take the assessment the counselors will know what to do for her at her conference

I’ll be a business major, so I have to take Math 141 and 142. I am taking Calc BC, but this question is just in case I bomb that test: If I do well on the math assessment, do I place out of both 141 and 142?

jrt336…good question…does doing well on the math assessment allow you to earn credit for any math courses…does anyone know?

the math assessment is a placement tool. If you have AP credit for math and don’t do well on the assessment, the advisor will want you to take math. If you have AP credits and do well on the assessment, they will allow you to place out of math.

Even if you do bad on the math assessment, you could still take the math classes that you want even if you do not have the AP credit to place out of the prerequisites.

So can we or can we not place out of 141 and 142 if we do well on the placement test?

You wouldn’t have the credits for Math 141 and 142, but yes, you could go on and take something like Calc 3 (Math 251/221) even if you don’t do well on the assessment.

I’ll do fine on the assessment, I was wondering if you could pass out of those two classes just doing that. Calc BC gets you out of Math 141 and 142, I think. If you get a 4 or 5, A&M gives you credit for Math 151 and 152. A&M also says that 151 and 152 “will be accepted in lieu of Math 141 and 142.” So I shouldn’t have to take 141 and 142 if I get a 4 or 5 right?

no - it isnt a test to place out of math all together.
My daughter did make a 4 on the AP test - she still had to take Math 142 - and advisor advised her to take 141 anyway. It was my daughters choice, and she did choose to take Math 141. A&M is tough in math. If she had only to take one Math course, she would have taken the AP credit.

Don’t really know how Math 141/142 works since it’s business calculus (which isn’t even real calculus -_-). But yes, if you receive a 4 or a 5 on the BC test, you will be to receive the credits. Just make sure when you call them for your AP credits, you specifically request Math 141/142 as your credits instead of 151/152.

Ok here’s another couple question-Will it tell us how many we got right? If we want to do it again and do worse, will they see both scores? If you take it a 2nd time, it isn’t the same test right?
