Math Diagnostic exam?

I was wondering if i needed to take the math diagnostic exam even though i've gotten a 5 in AP Calculus AB?

http://www.math.ucla.edu/ugrad/apcredit.shtml

Nope, you're exempt.

if i did retake math 31A/31B is it just like high school calculus AB? Partially i feel like i need it for review as well as to keep that GPA up. Will it be any harder or just a good review?

I don't know, because I never took AP Calculus in high school...

So I know there's a link to see what's on it but I didn't take Calc at my school so am I going to fail it? Or is it passable even if you didn't take calc?

31A should be cake. I believe it's from limits to optimization.

31B is more difficult to get an A though. There is an underestimated competition for first quarter 31B.

Plus, you will learn more than what you learned in AP Calculus AB and BC. Most often, high school teachers just prepare you for the AP Test. Many topics are skipped or skimmed through. Plus, no using your TI-89 or 83 to store integration tables.

31B will cover impartial fractions, its integrals, a lot of the series and tests that you probably forgot over the summer from BC, many integration techniques, probably binomial expansion (which is a key math concept for later courses), etc.

Of course, hw problems are not as simple as high school. There will be many traps and harder integrals (more impartials), instead of the simple "memorize the form" integration in high school.

Depending on your professor, the difficulty can range from 5-10.

I'm a bit confused on how AP credits work.. I got a 4 on the AP Calc AB exam.. so that means I have to take the MDT, right? And if I pass that, it means I can enroll in Math 31A? or could I enroll in 31B? Can anyone clear this up for me? Thanks

You will take the Math Placement test regardless . A passing score will enable you to enroll in 31B, or to retake 31A.

er wait wait, didn't flopsy just say if you had a 5 on the AP exam, you could waive the placement test and then just retake 31A if you would like to?

Yeah, if you got a 5 on the AP exam, then the placement test is waived but since I got a 4 I need to take it =(

If you receive a 5 on AP Calculus BC, you do not have to take the placement test. You can choose to enroll in 32A, or 31B. You cannot go back to 31A.

For any other score on Calculus BC, I believe you have to take the Placement test regardless.

If you receive a 5 on Calculus AB, you may waive the credits and take 31A, or take 31B.

Back when I was enrolling, they wouldn't allow me to take 31b- nice to see that they at least offer you the 31b choice now (my choice was 3C or 32A only)
