I got through Calculus in high school. I didn't take the AP test but I did get an A in the class. Do I have to take the exam even if I just want to be in Calculus again? Or does everyone have to take it?

yeah u do, sorry. u shoulda taken that AP test heh.

yes you do. however, i'm pretty sure you'll place into calc since you earned an A in high school calc already. i believe you can jump to 31B (second quarter calc) if you personally feel prepared for it. i would ask your orientation counselor for more advice.

one question though... what's your major? calc (or maybe even math!) isn't required for all majors.

I never took calculus in high school. Will I have to take that test? I'm majoring in psychology.

You only have to take the diagnostic exam if you are planning to take some kind of math course like calc at UCLA. Calc isn't a requirement for all majors...so if you are majoring in psychology and passed out of the quantitative reasoning requirement...you might not have to take the test.

...unless you plan on taking a math course for fun/intellectual development?? lol.

By the way...how hard is that diagnostic exam anyway? I took AP stat this year...so I haven't really done any pre-calc stuff since last year. :)

What if you took calc at community college and sent in transcripts already....................

assuming that community college course is UC transferable, I would say that they would accept it... however u would be required to take the next-level Calc course. my plan for this summer is to take a CC calc course to refresh my mind, and then take the equivalent course at UCLA so that i have a good grasp. (of course, i wont send in the transcripts... its for educational purposes) i fear CC level courses wont prepare me well enough to start the next level so i would want to get a good foundation.

that's a good plan. I was thinking of doing the same thing. =)

the diagnostic is a piece of cake, futureCaligirl. You really shouldn't worry too much about it.

I'm on the same page as futureCaligirl in terms of not doing any pre-calc since last year and taking AP Stat this year. So I dunno if I should take the placement exam cuz I don't remember much of pre-calc and have no calc experience whatsoever.

does it hurt to take the placement exam besides wasting a bit of time?

i'd say just take it anyway, especially if you POTENTIALLY need to take a math class. i took AP stats my senior year and forgot a lot of calc and pre-cal but i did fine. like icarus said, the exam isn't that difficult.

just wondering, do i need to take the math placement exam, if i got a 5 on the AP calculus ab exam?

no. but u can take it for fun!

Regarding the math placement exam, I signed up for it but I heard that you don't have to take it if you get a 4 or a 5 on ap calc. I signed up for it just in case. Are we obligated to take it and can we get a refund?

I don't understand the whole necessity for the Math Diagnostic Examination. If you did well enough on the SAT II Math Ic/IIc examination to get into UCLA, you've already pre-emptively passed the Math Diagnostic Examination by a fair margin.

"do i need to take the math placement exam, if i got a 5 on the AP calculus ab exam?"

no, i think you'll just place into the next level of calculus (math 31b or 3b)

"Are we obligated to take it and can we get a refund?"

no, you are not obligated to take it. you won't be getting a refund because you didn't pay anything extra for it! the diagnostic is free. conversely, if you didnt sign up for it but you want to take it, you can do that too. the reason for the signups is just to get an estimate of how many tests to provide during orientation.

I got a 4 on Calc AB, which means I pass out of 31A, which leads me to these questions:

1) Is there any point to taking the Math Diagnostic Exam at Orientation?

2) Basically I will be taking 31B in the fall right? there's no other choice?

3) What if a major requires that you have Math 31A?

there is no point in taking the math Diagnostic exam since you've already passed out of Math 31A. If math 31B is required for your major then you will probably enroll in that class in the fall. I'm going into electrical engineering, and Math 31A is required for my major. However, since i got a 5 on the AP Calc exam, I've satisfied that requirement. I can directly go into Math 31B which is also required for my major.
