So I placed into 108, 117, 118. However, I took Honors Calculus this year and did well. Is there anyway I can bypass taking pre-calc and take 125?

I’m not positive but I think you can always try retaking the math placement test and seeing if you get placed in something higher. Otherwise I’m pretty sure there isn’t another way to bypass pre-calc. Unless you took the AP Calc exam.

I just placed in 118 or 125. What does that even mean?

It means you placed the highest possible, nineLDN.

118 is trig and 125 is calculus 1.

Sweet thanks for letting me know.

if I test into a higher level math class can I still opt to take a lower level one?

bump 10char.

if I test into a higher level math class can I still opt to take a lower level one?

anyone know?

please help!

I think people aren’t replying because no one can say for sure. I would presume that you could, yeah. I recommend you just email a USC academic advisor under your department. They’ll be happy to help you. Go to your department’s USC page and look around for an advisor’s contact information. If you can’t find it there, just head to http://www.usc.edu/org/caa/Advisor/, click visit the master list and find one.

have you been to orientation yet? Depending on your degree, you may not be taking math first semester, in which case it’s not something that will even come up until your individual advisement once the school year starts.

Why would you want to take a lower level math class? Easier A?

Did you guys study for the math placement test a lot? I’m a bit worried about it and so im procrastinating…

You can find a loose overview of what’s on it here, [USC Testing Bureau](http://sait.usc.edu/testing_bureau/placement_math.shtml). From what I’ve seen, it’s pretty generous with placement. You can score reasonably low and still get into the highest category, say if you’re rusty.

didn’t study at all, didn’t do very well, but I was still placed into 118/125.

Some freshmen start at MATH-226, which is Calc 3. They do it with AP test credits though.

I chose to start at MATH-125 because I felt pretty shaky on my basic calculus going into college. It was definitely a good decision for me, I would not have been able to keep up in calc 2 first semester.

Hi Hawkwings, whats your major and was Math 125 too easy then? Did you have AP Calc credit?

My major is aerospace engineering. Math-125 was definitely not “too easy”. I (re)learned quite a bit and felt that it definitely helped me. I did not have AP calc credit, since I was in the IB program instead.

is the math placement test hard??

^^No, the math placement exam isn’t too bad. It was kinda hard for me because there was stuff on it I hadn’t gone over since like freshman and junior year, but it’s definitely managable. I tried studying for it from some old SAT Subject Test books and it kinda helped but I say just wing it :)
