Math SAT II and admission chances

I got my Math SAT II score today and it was very bad (680), not characteristic of my math skills at all. Other than that, I think my chances with Cornell Engineering ED would have been very high. I want to apply to Cornell for materials science, focusing on energy materials and renewable energy research. I have a high SAT II science score, years of research in engineering with a published paper in top peer-reviewed journal, very good grades (top 10%), high ACT score (34), lots of extracurriculars, a very strong essay and I’m a female in engineering. I’m But now I believe this score will really hurt my chances. So I’m deciding whether to apply to CALS for environmental engineering (because it’s similar to what I want to do and doesn’t require the math sat II) or CoE for materials science and engineering. What do you think I should do? Will this score automatically throw me out?

What was your math score on your ACT?

34

It’s very possible with your excellent stats you will be fine. I know someone who got into Arts and Sciences ED with a 680 in Chem Sat II.
They can obviously see by your curriculum and ACT score that you are capable.
I can’t advise you on which college to apply to, just that I don’t think the 680 eliminates you.
Good luck

Unless you’re as passionate for EnvE as you are for MatSci, which you seem really interested in, don’t apply to CALS since there aren’t many options for engineering majors through CALS if you end up changing your mind, and transferring into engineering can be tough. You’re SAT II scores are much less significant compared to your performance on the ACT and your actual math courses, so don’t sweat it.

Thank you so much!!!
