Emory: Good match
Brown: Sizable Reach (they have a really low acceptance rate)
Georgia Tech: easy/low Match
USC: Match
Stanford: Big reach

Good luck, and get the CR up!

Your GPA is not mediocre (especially considering the quality of your school) if you can crack the top 10%. Good luck!

Northwestern — Low Reach/High Match
Cornell — Low Reach
Duke — Reach
UPenn — Reach, but High Reach for Wharton
Emory — High Match

Thanks for the chance.

GPA may hurt you, but otherwise solid candidate

brown- reach
GT - ? not from the south, nor considering it
USC -high match
Stanford – reach

3.86 does not get you top 10% at your school?

Ouch. Sounds like your school is a massive inflater, even if it is a top public.

A 3.86 is mediocre?

and the 3.86 is out of 4.0.
school is really competitive (well at least my year is, my year is predicted to be the most competitive in quite a while)

My Opinion, if you can shake a 2300 and then take the ACT and get a 34 (and do take the ACT), then you’ll probably be:

Northwestern — 80%, I live in Chicago, its not that hard
Cornell — 50%, Cornell likes to reject students
Duke — 60-70%, also likes to reject students, but you’re stats seem promising
UPenn — 30%, you pretty much have to be an alumni or a genius to get in
Emory — 80%, not very hard, I’m actually looking for a full-ride
Brown — 30%, even though its still not as high as some others, its got a very LOW admissions rate
GT — 90%, from Georgia, they’d be lucky to have you
USC — 70%, distance is an issue, but you’re pretty competitive
Stanford — 10%, yeah right!

OP, are you seriously listening to yourself? you tell us your school/class is “really competitive” and yet a 3.86/4.00 is “mediocre”? if your school is nearly as tough as you claim it is NOBODY should be getting a 3.86/4.00 much less >10% of your class. in any case, your profile is on track for your schools, except that nothing really seems to stand out about you. i agree with what has been said above though, you have to rise above the inflation that your school is clearly doing to distinguish yourself from the hordes or virtually identical applicants.

He’s not ranked in the top 10%. And no one cares about US News public school rankings. Probably in at Tech, Emory, and USC. I think it’s likely that he doesn’t get in to any of the other schools on that list without being top 10%.

Actually, when I think of it, if you go to a very top public school, your rank won’t affect you that much. At least in my school (also near the top), about 20% go on to top 20 schools, and certainly at least half aren’t in the top 10%.

^ Does your school officially rank? Also, keep in mind that when you rank the top 100 schools for getting students in to Ivies, only about three of them are public. So don’t ignore the boarding schools and elite private day schools.

Your GPA isn’t that bad… mine is worse D:. But if it’s true that you’re taking the most challenging schedule in your school, rest assured that that counts as well… Many schools consider each high school individually regarding the offered courses’ rigor and scheduling format. Your SAT scores are actually really impressive. The gap between Math/Writing and CR can be fixed with a bit of self-studying, so don’t worry (CR is always my weakest too). On the down side, your EC’s seem a bit undistinguished, i.e. not unique… However, if you prove that you’re passionate about each of them (and I’m sure you are), then that will also make a big difference…

In the end, the way I see it is:

Northwestern — Match
Cornell — Low Reach
Duke — Reach
UPenn — Reach
Emory — Match
Brown — Low Reach
GT — Match
USC — Match
Stanford — High Reach

All in all, best of luck dude!
