Alright, so I took AP bio in high school and received a four. The thing is some colleges (like UCSF) only take bio from college. Now here's the pickle: UCSD won't let me retake bild 1-2 because I passed the AP. I was thinking of retaking these classes in summer school (or some community college) now the academic advisor at ERC is saying I can't do that. Any help? Thanks!

Only thing you could have done is forfeited the AP Biology score. If you're already at UCSD, and the AP Biology score is on your record...Nothing you can do.

For med school you only need one year of bio and a quarter of lab. Coincidentally another med school requirement is to take genetics, molecular biology, and physiology, which adds up to exactly one year of bio. It's nice to review some of your AP notes since some of those concepts will reappear in the upper div classes, as well as the mcat, but the way I see it, bild 1 and 2 would be extraneous courses to add to your resume.

i think you can take bild 1&2 at ucsd, it's just that you won't receive credit for taking those courses (which doesn't seem to be an issue these days). i say this because a roommate of mine scored a 4 on ap chem but is taking chem 6a without credit.

be careful -- med schools usually demand one year of GENERAL biology, with a select few also requiring upper-division biology courses. i think you should meet with your counselor again...

Wait, there's a difference between general bio and upper div bio? Harvard's website implied that one should just take upper div if one has already used AP credit.

how do u forfeit AP scores? b/c the college would still see it on the AP score report wouldn't they?

You either don't send your AP score in, or you talk to someone at the academic affairs office prior to sending the score in. It's not a simple "check a box" process.

If you have AP, they want something upper division to substitute.

No med school says hands-down you have to retake general bio. They recommend you do, but they also accept you using AP credit and taking upper division bio. Bottom line, they just want you to do a year of bio. As for the facism of ucsd, you wont be able to retake bild1 or 2 anyway (you wont get a grade or gpa)

Even if you don't have to as an admission requirement (UCSD SOM doesn't require it), it's better to do so anyways just so that you don't limit your choices.
