Back in the days....we were at an all girl college in CT, bussed reguarly to the USCGA for "mixers" and "socials." Too funny now to even think about it, but it grew old fast back then- uniform or not! If there were hounds, they were definately of the male variety! ;)

so can someone clarify the plebe dances for me? my boyfriend (appointee to 2010) wants me to try and come up for at least one of the dances next year, but i have no idea how many they are/when they are. my aunts a flight attendant so i get free flights... yesss! i'll be going to the best university of texas next year, i might add (hook em!)

Correct me if i'm mistaken, but i seem to remember a girls college just outside of NAPS, Salve Regina?

Salve is there but it is a coed school; mostly women though.

that works for me ;)

Oh, my. This conversation has really taken on a life of its own, hasn't it? Don't know what they have near Annapolis, but West Point has Ladycliff. Word was that girls only went there to meet cadets.

My girlfriends and I finally started drinking before the dances; it made it really easy to laugh at the stupid pick up lines.

My favorite line? "Can you name the seven dwarfs?"

My darling daughter admits that one of the attractions of attending USNA is that it is a "target rich environment".

Should I admit that?

To answer a few questions, a lot of girls at the dances are from Annapolis. Lots of times they're invited to go by the mid they sponsor. Not all mid hounds are high schoolers. Lots of them are from the area and go to college somewhere close by. There are some all women colleges in Baltimore, a 30 minute drive (it goes a little faster if you speed). One is College of Notre Dame and a predominately female college which recently turned co-ed is Hood. There are also a lot of mid hounds who go to the community college, which is conveniently located 15 minutes away from downtown. While I do not consider myself a mid hound (I've never dated a midshipmen) I do have to agree with beachmom's daughter, it is a "target rich environment." It helps that all my guy friends who are mids actually know how to treat a lady because they are trained to be polite officers. Today I went to see the Blue Angels and ran into one of my female mid friends who agrees with me, all the guys hold open doors, it's refreshing since that doesn't happen a lot anymore.

Yeah...it's a target rich environment...if you're a girl.

Guys are gonna need a friggin' FAC to aquire any priority targets.

...unless we just decide to go for 'targets of opportunity' ;)

Navy2010! Didn't you know!? Its tequila tuesday!

Mid-hounds or no, ahhhh to be young again! LOL My Mid boasts that he is indeed a southern gentleman. Thats to his mamma though. He's always opened doors and seated ladies as long as I can recall. Even the ones in uniform who he deems his equals. One girl slugged him during Indoc because he opened a door for her. He does see you as his equal, girls. He was just being respectful in the southern manner which he was raised. He wrote to me his befuzzled thoughts about it during Indoc. Clueless is kinda cute so watch out for the southern ones, I say. They're more dangerous.

Now, now lets not all get so rowdy here. There are plenty of targets for us guys. Because trust me, after going through boot camp you get what we shall refer to as "plebe vision". Where it is not required to be a target rich environment, merely a target of opportunity environment. That and once everyone gets through plebe summer and the boys are cut and the girls rockin, things will change. Plus everybody loves the challenge of fooling around when you aren't allowed to. What is the best motivator? Tell someone something can't be done and sit back and watch, because it will be done.

And Jamzmom you are right, us southern gentlemen are a dieing breed.

What is REALLY amazing [and, Z, you are closing in on the age] is that after a while, the grandmother starts looking pretty good too!

I've seen a few that truly broke the stereotype, let me tell you.

Remember that Bowflex commercial?

Well, that's its OFFICIAL name.

The name the NAPSters have given it is somewhat less flattering. :D

I'll not post it in light of the fact there are ladies present. Yes, I do have my limits. :)

Good for him!

Did he slug her back? After all, they want to be treated as equals, right?

No slugs back. He was truly dumbfounded. He's still doing it & from what I hear, he's not caused any harm. He calls several of the girls at KP, his sisters and I dare anyone to pick on anyone of them if he's around. I dunno what he calls the ones he meets in NYC, cause I'm his mamma.

USNA is surrounded by about 50 colleges and universities - no shortage of either female or male possibilities. From UMD at College Park, to all the DC schools - American, Georgetown, George Washington, Catholic, Trinity(all girl), Howard, Galludet, Marymount, George Mason; Up in Baltimore are Johns Hopkins, UMBC, Loyola, Goucher, Towson, etc.
Closest is St. Johns - their curriculum is to read the "Great Books," so their outlook is a bit different. The big deal there is the annual croquet match with Navy - the mids finally bought professional balls after losing so much...

That's the understatement of the millenium.

The folks over there make Confused23 look like Ronald Reagan....

But those Johnnies know how to hit balls through wickets! Mids just don't do Alice in Wonderland very well....

yeah i heard the st. john's people were weirdos.. maybe that explains why theyre on the list of colleges with vacancies right now? but seriously, can anyone give me a run down on all the plebe dances?

JM- have sworn off the tequila! But you know how bill always gets his fridays mixed up with mondays- LOL!

I might just have to take up some serious libations- just got word that the gf is contemplating a college within the 22 mile limit- as if he needs another diversion- ugggggg....what to do, what to do! Send him away to an all-boys school in the middle of nowhere and look what happens!

ps...what is this I-ball thing? can someone please explain?

I knew one girl from Hood College who I met in Ocean City, MD during the summer. I went to the college a few times for a diversion but I primarily went to Towson State and the University of Maryland. I dated the MD lady and married her even though she was very liberal. She is now more conservative than I.

Another interesting place for us to visit during second class summer (going to summer school for speech if I remember correctly) were trips to the Officer's Club at the Naval Yard in DC. I remember it being really busy; however, we always had to turn beat feet it out of there around 11:15 to make it back for taps.

And my favorite place though most mids didn't venture there was Ocean City, MD. I hung out with a bunch of surfers and we made the trip to OC many, many weekends in the fall, and my girlfriend worked at Phillips Crabhouse there. Great place to relax.

Back in our day, there was a 13 and 75 mile limit for different types of liberty. What is the 22 mile limit and could you still go to OC, DC, U of MD or has that all changed?

Jamzmom,
Its the girls loss if she didn't like having the door opened for her. My boys will always open doors and I will have it no other way. My "modern" daughter appreciates it as well. I think it shows courtesy.

Plebe year you can't really go out of the vicinity of Annapolis (3 mile limit I believe). As an upperclassmen you can go to DC and Baltimore. I'm not sure what steps would have to be taken to venture out to Ocean City, it is a 2 hour drive without traffic so I believe you would need special permission. Just be carfeul going out to Ocean City on the weekends, the traffic is insane going over the Bay Bridge.
