oh.. MIT's Mid-year grades report asks send its report after grades for first term of school is avaiable. my school has a quarte-system. (basically 1 period is 1.5 hours long, and our 2 quarter(August-December) is same as other school's one year).. and first quarter is finished couple weeks ago. do i have to tell my GC to send Mid-year grades report now?? or wait until 2nd quarter is finished?????

Yeah... I am also confused by this... My school uses a quarter system and the "mid-year" grade report says to send it in as soon as first term grades are available. I thought a term was a quarter and a semester was 2 quarters? Do they mean semester?

My HS ran on a quarter system. I believe they mean one semester, two quarters. I sent mine after the second quarter ended.

if u r still not sure, call the college and ask them...they will gladly tell u the answer u need!

One term = one semester = 2 quarters

I'm pretty sure about this--my school runs on a quarter system, too. But, as sophster said, better check if you're not sure.

I had called the admissions office about this. They said that if the school has had past applicants to MIT, the guidance counselors would know. But that they don't expect them til December/January after the Early Action round.

Yes, but what if your counselor is an utter ditz that you wouldn't trust with a such a simple question?

Incidentally, did they give you a straight answer, or is that part of the charm of MIT?

At my school, we have 2 quarters= 2 semesters. But quarter grades don't "count" (i.e., you can get a high C the first quarter, a high A the next quarter, and an A+ on the final and if the percentages work out--40, 40, 20--you can get an A for the semester and that's ALL that goes on your transcript.). First quarter grade is 40%, second quarter is 40%, the final is worth 20%. It's actually really funny to calculate grades in some teachers classes, if you know their point system. One of my teachers gives 100 points per assignment, and few assignments, so if you get an average of 97/100 on them your grade is 97%=A. And if you do that for two quarters, you can figure "I got a 97 first quarter, a 95 second quarter... so I can get a... 66% on the final and still have an A for the semester!"

And ditto on the counselor being a ditz thing. The majority of my friends have averaged about 2 counselors per year (they keep switching them into different counselors or they keep firing/hiring counselors) so now that it's recommendation time they're really screwed. About 90% of the counselors at my school don't REALLY know what they are doing, or at least would have no idea on little important questions like this one.

Oh, major ditto. I totally bombed my chem mid-year (C+) and ended up with an A for the semester. I still can't figure the numbers, because my quarter grades weren't that "strong" for A's--a 93 (borderline A/A-) and a 95. And he didn't fudge the numbers. I actually asked him....

My counselor actually told my friend, in all seriousness, to read the horoscope to get an idea of what profession she should persue. Her horoscope! When I applied to various UC's (SD, SB, SC) (because, as we are all painfully aware, admission to MIT is not guaranteed in any sense of the word) I asked her if she could send a transcript (they don't ask for recs) and she blinked stupidly and said, "I don't know. No one has ever applied there before. One of my friends is going there. Graduated last year, from my high school. ????
