Hi!
I recently sent in the optional essay for W&M. I was reading it over and I realize there was a comma that was in the wrong position (It was in-between quotations when it should have followed the second quotation mark). I know it seems to be a minor detail, but now I am freaking out. I do not want the admissions board to think that I did not take the time to properly do the essay I did, because W&M is my top choice. Should I do anything about the mistake or hope for the best?
Thanks :)

I would do nothing and not worry about it. Odds are they won’t notice. Even if they do notice it will be viewed as a very minor error. If you tell them about it, they will definitely notice. Good Luck at W&M. I applied also. I left out a period in my essay. :>)

This is a very minor error and not one that would cause us to question your grammatical knowledge or your efforts. However, if you’re concerned, you can fax an updated copy of your essay to 757-221-1242 or email it as the body of the email to admission@wm.edu. Sending an updated copy will not cause us to read your original looking for errors. We know that little mistakes happen and are happy to give you the opportunity to correct them.

Most people do not know that rule re: commas and quotations! I would actually view that little error as proof that the student wrote the work, not a professional or a tutor. :-)

Good luck!!

I have a similar question.

Only after submitting did I realize that I attached a draft of my essay. The only problem was that one of the sentences I wanted to use was in the wrong place. My final draft had the sentence in another location (it created a bigger impact this way). So I was wondering if I can send an updated essay too? would this qualify for an update?

EaglesforLife, you are welcome to submit an updated copy of your essay by fax (757-221-1242), mail, or email (admission@wm.edu). If you email it, make it the body of the email. We will not, by policy, open an attachment.
