MIT Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES)

umm, the ppl who got called are the ones who didn't get in but invited to "fly-in", right? so if MITES called u, it might mean u didn't get in, but u can come to MIT for a week?

I would say that they are going to call at least 10% of the applicants because hundreds of people apply to the MITES program, and from those 10% there's going to be many that aren't going to be able to go to the Junior Fly-in.

All the fly-ins can visit MIT for free but they don't get to attend MITES.

Hey you guys so..

You now how stats show that about 66% of the people that are in MITES make it into MIT..
I wonder what the stats are for the Jr. Fly-in

^
Even free air fare right?

I'm sure your chances of going in increases as well, since you get to meet the admissions people most likely. Of course it won't be as high as 66%(are you sure about this stat? I though it was like 80%) but it'll definitely make you more preferred over someone of similar stats. Maybe instead of 12% acceptance rate into MIT, fly-ins will get 25%(just a guess)

Where are you getting 66% from? AkyBaky, who went last year, said that a vast majority get accepted, around 85%. But also keep in mind that some of the participants choose not to apply or matriculate. He also said that only a couple get rejected every year.

lol you can actually put "junior fly-in" in your application???

oh well i got 66% from when i went to MIT last summer because that's what one of the students I met with told me.. it might different but that's what i had heard

^he'd been in MITES a while ago though because he's a senior at MIT this year.

the last sentence of the 6th paragraph says 60%

Vest responds to WSJ's recent MITES article - MIT News Office

well best of luck to all of those that haven't got a call yet(and congrats to those that did). Hopefully we can all get the reply soon

only 40 people get to go to the fly-in, and I don't think they're all MITES applicants, I'm guessing they come from some of the other programs as well, depending on the strength of the application

Ok so let me clear this up. I'm pretty sure i never put a percentage on how many people get into MIT from MITES I think I may have just said that most do. I'm a senior in high school. And I'm MIT class of 2012. This year 51 of 64 got into MIT from my MITES class which was last year (2007) and 2 students didn't even apply to MIT. So essentially 50 of 62 got in. Those stats were told to me in an email with the director of the program; so thats around 80% more or less.

And about this fly-in program. I can in know way talk about how much that helps your chances or increases your chances at MIT because honestly I don't know. I'd never even heard of this fly-in program until I read the thread a couple pages back. But I'm willing to bet your chances increase to something more then the regular 12% :-D.

someone asked a while back, but here are my stats : )

GPA: 102.6 (we don't do 4.0 scale at my school)
Rank: 2/ 676
PSAT: 221 (M: 73 CR: 76 W:72)
SAT: 2150 (M:700 CR: 730 W:720)
AP Scores so far:
AP World History 4, we can only take 1 AP sophomore year, right now I'm in Pre-AP pre-cal, AP Chemistry, APUSH, AP Env. Science, AP English, AP Spanish-doing a ton next year

ECs:
I've been playing violin for 8 years, and am in my school's top orchestra, I'm in my church's choir and am active in its youth group, editor of school's literary magazine, I am starting my own tutoring program for elementary school students with the public library system...haha too lazy to think of everything I put

Clubs: Science Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Environmental Issues, NHS, Spanish Honor Society, Texas Performance Standards Project (I'm starting the tutoring program through this program)

haha doesn't seem like much now....

Those really are pretty nice stats, I can see why you are fly-in, but what are they really looking for in a real eligible student? Selpaso, whats your family background(as in if anyone is in science), income(lower, middle, upper), school college rate and awards?

regarding the fly in... they told me that I ALMOST made it into the program, i was a few people behind (you know what i mean). they told me that they are sending me and some other people the invitation because we have high chances of being future MIT students if we apply. in there, we are getting to stay with a host and talk with admission officers, go to classes, and get to know several "people".
and yes, its totally free, the airplane fare is free, they just sent me the pass today, tomorrow i gotta fax my medical release.
in my resume im gonna put M.I.T. Junior Fly-In Program. hey, its something (other Us other than MIT might think its something else). I think im gonna go to UF because im gonna miss my mom , so ill e able to visit more often, and I get to go for almost free b/c of FL scholarships.(thats right, i have the balls to say it) Ill apply to MIT just for fun though (and who knows, i might just go)

^Well who knows MIT might just offer you a better Financial Aid Package than home state schools. Two years ago our saluditorian was torn between UCLA and MIT, and if I remember correctly, MIT was about 10k less than UCLA and California is pretty good on state scholarships. (He went with MIT.)

ill see when time comes. by the way everyone, on my curriculum theres also a program i have started for helping immigrants study for the citizenship test.

hey tzky1990. ur stats look really good! u took all those math stuff I prob wouldn't learn in high school!!
hey, just wondering, is doing research in some university in the midwest (with the possibility of entering Intel) better than going to MITES? just wondering....
