MIT Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES)

<p>Today? Oh, right.</p>

<p>Fried rice sounds good right about now.</p>

<p>From my essay:</p>

<p>
Even today, I still have a thick accent. Having such an accent has its disadvantages, as well as some advantages. I still have trouble communicating with other people and expressing my ideas. This is especially hurtful in English class in which in my high school demands doing graded oral performances. Not everything is doom and gloom though. I find it advantageous that most girls find my accent very appealing (or so it seems to me). Which is an advantage, right!?"

</p>

<p>LMAO, this is so sad.</p>

<p>Lol! "Not everything is doom and gloom though."</p>

<p>Woah! Even more LOL: "I find it advantageous that most girls find my accent very appealing (or so it seems to me). Which is an advantage, right!?"</p>

<p>And you're still hoping for acceptance? Well, considering that I wrote about equally weird stuff in my essays, I would say...don't give up!</p>

<p>Your English class makes you do graded oral performances? Are you in AP? Or English as a second lang?</p>

<p>More essay quotes! More essay quotes! (especially the silly ones like ours)</p>

<p>Wait! ... Did I really write "the Taiwan"??? oops...oh well, I was still accepted.</p>

<p>This one is sooooo corny:</p>

<p>
I came back to reality. I nodded hastily and sprinted down the hall into the laboratory. In the freezer, there were packets of blood. They were neatly arranged: A, B, AB, O. I came to a screeching halt. “Which one?” I exclaimed. “A…B…AB…O…I should of paid attention in Biology class!” I blurted out. There was no time to figure out the man’s blood type, but suddenly I remembered that my very own blood type is O…the universal donor! Eureka! I hurried back to the operating room with a handful of type O blood. Later, I sighed in relief, knowing that I played my part in saving one’s life.

</p>

<p>I honestly don't think you have a chance friedrice...</p>

<p>Wow - you wrote a personal narrative! I wish I had room in my essays to do that.</p>

<p>I agree with calculus09: I would have chosen some different words for that essay, mr. friedrice. Then again, there's my essay - but I think my acceptance was an anomaly. (in fact, these quotes from your essays have altered how I imagine you in my mind lol)</p>

<p>From now on, guys, we need to take these essays seriously. This IS our future, you know.</p>

<p>"I hurried back to the operating room with a fi****l of type O blood."</p>

<p>What?</p>

<p>What did your essay say after that friedrice?</p>

<p>I literally did my essays in class on Friday Feb. 1 just before the mailman came...</p>

<p>Your eyes will bleed:</p>

<p>
This was just one of the many duties I have at Highline Medical Center. Fortunately, such intense situations involving an emergency operation are rare, but still important. Few people my age have the same responsibility I have. To me, assisting the nurses at Highline Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit is both a privilege and a burden. Having volunteered for a little over a year now, the hospital seems like I have seen everything there is supposed to be seen: Life. Death. And everything in between.

</p>

<p>The last paragraph of a different essay:</p>

<p>
I returned back to class the next day with my head held high and revitalized courage to face my fears. Just like what Dr. King said: “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
</p>

<p>SO BADDD!!!!! Now I don't think I'll get accepted :/</p>

<p>I don't get what Dr. King's quote has to do with the rest of what I've read.</p>

<p>"I literally did my essays in class on Friday Feb. 1 just before the mailman came..."</p>

<p>Me toooooo! But I took mine a little more seriously then you did. Sorry, friedrice - I think this will be an irreplaceable adventure.</p>

<p>I think the competition is less fierce this year.</p>

<p>

Your English class makes you do graded oral performances? Are you in AP? Or English as a second lang?
</p>

<p>No, I'm not in AP, I'm in IB. IB English emphasizes oral performances...I hate it so much because I have stage fright and suck at doing literally analysis on the spot.</p>

<p>
But I took mine a little more seriously then you did.
</p>

<p>You don't think I took my essays seriously? :(</p>

<p>My last essay talked about my skin color. So I related it to Dr. King. I gave you portions of different essays that's why.</p>

<p>
I honestly don't think you have a chance friedrice...
</p>

<p>We'll find out today... lol</p>

<p>Be prepared for a rejection letter....</p>

<p>"You don't think I took my essays seriously?"</p>

<p>Are you telling me you did? Sorry, some of it seemed good. But man... this does not seem like it belongs in a MITES essay: "I find it advantageous that most girls find my accent very appealing (or so it seems to me). Which is an advantage, right!?" But, calculus09, you never know.</p>

<p>"I gave you portions of different essays that's why."</p>

<p>Oh. That makes a little more sense. (looking back...ah yes you did say that)</p>

<p>I wouldn't get my hopes up, my friend.</p>

<p>Man you guys made me depressed now at 2:00 am in the morning!!! :) -----> :( ---> :mad:</p>

<p>Sorry about the depressing message. You still could prove us wrong, ya know. I was surprised I was accepted based on the nonsense I wrote about.</p>

<p>So far we have (let me know if I'm missing anyone):</p>

<p>BeAn
Ouraqt (me!)
rosee09
NICA4LYF
Shadman
pgtori</p>

<p>More about what I'm thinking right now:</p>

<p>1) Looking back, some of the fly-ins (people who were ALMOST accepted from what I understand) had way better stats than me. This tells me that the selections committee is good at finding out who NEEDs this program the most to catalyze their potential.</p>

<p>2) It's funny to me how a good percentage of the people who applied to this program hang out at the same forum - I guess this is the only place to talk about MITES, but still...</p>

<p>Also take note most of the people here are Asians. lol</p>

<p>Amazing how there is 3 pages worth of nothing between the time that I went to sleep last night and when I arrived to school this morning. Today is the day!</p>
