I think it's important to note that MITES looks for different qualities in applicants than regular old MIT admissions officers do. The best (as in, most likely to be admitted) MITES applicants are those who were disadvantaged because of something they couldn't control (e.g. being a minority), yet, if given an amazing opportunity like the MITES program, could thrive. Traditional chance posts aren't a good indication of whether you'll be accepted. Good grades and a good PSAT score will get you considered (and that's about all they will do for you), but you've got to show how you could benefit from the program.

So if I'm black but I seriously can't think of a time since first grade when I've been disadvantaged, no matter what great stats I have, I have little to no chance of getting in?

The MITES essays are the same as they were last year. Here are the prompts:

What are your career goals? How might attending MITES support these goals?

Which one of your extracurricular or volunteer activities is most important to you and why?

How has your racial or ethnic identity affected your academic development? How has it influenced your aspirations?

Please describe a personal, social, or academic challenge you have faced and overcome.

If you can answer those questions, then definitely apply. (the application is free!)

And you probably have been disadvantaged for some reason (it doesn't have to be because you're black - although that will definitely help you).

A lot of people thought they had "no chance of getting in" (including myself), but were admitted anyway.

I was just wondering if i have any chance of getting in... Im so nervous:

I'm a refugee from Rwanda. escaped from the genocide.
one of my parents went to college
make less than 50,000
sat: CR:600 M:670 W:670 (i know...low)
i have a ton of volunteer work. secretary of junior optimist, tutoring, etc....

you have a chance (multiple good hooks). if you like, you can compare your SAT score to the PSAT scores on the MITES website (on the Recruitment and Selection page).

but we don't have enough information. how are your grades? good grades are highly valued - they show that in the midst of the challenges you faced (especially the ones you faced...dang), you can thrive and succeed.

Darn I had 2 B's freshmen year, All A's Sophomore Year, and all 4 B's my 1st semester junior year. I've taken 4 APs so far, am half urm and my parents always get laid off(im pretty disadvantaged). do you think i can get in? (2110 SAT, 800 in Math), varsity track/cross country junior year and jv fresh and soph years, band 4 years

ps... my mom didnt graduate high school and my dad went to a ghetto Los Angeles Community College :

Um, I'm Asian Indian ( I know I'm not MITES material) but I had an interesting past where I was separated from my parents for three years. It did affect me.
Do you think that qualifies?
Technically anyone that isn't white is a minority . . .

Well, they state that they're primarily looking for traditionally disadvantaged minorities/underrepresented in engineering and science fields (African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans).

im seriously worried because i have a B in calc ap and bio ap. my school emphasizes APs extremely and changes grades according to AP scores(5-->A). That probably explains why I have 4 B's. :( my SAT score is 2130(kinda good i guess, with 800 in math). But, still, I am worried. :(

@Life4TIM: Your grades seem alright. My grades were sprinkled with a few B's here and there. Your PSAT score is a tad low, but certainly still competitive. Korean counts as a minority, so that and your low income will help you out. Knowing people who went to MIT/MITES won't help you in admissions.

@futurexreject: Don't worry about a couple B's, just do your best to bring them up. You have a high SAT score for MITES standards. You said you have 4 b's - as long as they aren't all in the same semester, you're fine. BTW. Your SAT score is the same as mine, the first time I took it. Try not studying the second time - ironically enough, my friend and I didn't study the second time and scored about 200 points higher.

It's obvious both of you are competitive and stand a chance. Which means you should apply and not worry about chances. :)

I am applying for the 2009 MITES program. I have a 4.0 GPA, take PreCalculus PreAP, Physics I PreAp, US History AP, Spanish IV AP, Biology II AP, English III AP, and Chemistry II AP. I am hispanic. I have a 4.0/4.0 GPA and rank 2/421. But, I have a low PSAT/SAT math scores, 58/570. Total PSAT/SAT scores 179/1830 (I know it's bad, I'm really bad at timed tests) Are there any alumni out there with scores close to this? Does anyone think it will matter with my other information?
