MIT MITES Summer 2014

April needs to come sooner (because of MITES’s decisions) but needs to stay away (because of all the things I need to do before now and then). I’m going to start preparing myself for rejection now…

I think the MITES people are mean. They said decisions come out in April. Nothing specific like April 15, no. Just April. Now I’m gonna be a nervous wreck the entire month lol

I’m going to cry if I get accepted…

My friend and I both applied to the program, so we’re really nervous; we hope that both of us get in, but it’ll be awkward if one of us gets in and the other doesn’t. :(

@brown210 Dude, I cried when I submitted my app. I know I’ll be an emotional wreck the entire month of April.
@screamingpumpkin My best friend also applied, and she’s wayyyy more qualified for MITES than I am, so I know it’s gonna be awkward when she gets in and I don’t. But maybe all of us will get in and we can avoid all awkwardness! “Yay optimism!”, she says with a touch of sarcasm.

@emywemy610 My friend and I are both qualified, but I don’t know if one is more qualified than the other. I’m expecting rejection; acceptance would be a pleasant surprise.

@screamingpumpkin Haha same!

@screamingpumpkin, @emywemy610, two of the E2ers came from a relatively competitive STEM magnet HS that was 99% minority and usually gets quite a few people to MITES and top colleges every year. The HS encouraged all the top students to apply and most of them did. I think they were the only ones of all three programs who came from the same HS(and the only ones from their HS to get into any of the three). So it is possible!

@AmaranthineD I’m not sure that I’m very competitive in the entire scheme of things. I don’t have any STEM ECs, and my test scores aren’t extremely high either. I’m just hoping that my essays help pull me through, along with my other activities!

@AmaranthineD I had a lot of engineering/math/comp sci related EC’s, but they weren’t through my school… would I be the kind of candidate they’re looking for? My GPA is also a bit low… (3.7ish) but I also had a super rigorous schedule… the only kid in my grade taking AP Calc BC as a junior… also had a decent PSAT

@brown210, MITES results are extremely unpredictable, but if you’re a URM, they’ve probably had students like you.

What did you get on the PSAT? @brown210 I am also the only junior taking Calc BC at my school.

@Mathmaticious 209

@brown210, that is probably at or above the average for students applying to MITES, I believe (depending on the subsection score). On the website I think they have(or used to have) a score chart.

@Mathmaticious, many of the MITES/E2 kids had Calc BC as a junior, so that is good. Of course, just as many(like me) didn’t have it. XD They understand that a lot of times it depends on your school district’s math progression/willingness to let you skip levels.

Do you know if they review applications according to region or if it is just random?

I just realized that I had made a mistake on my MITES app. My guidance counselor told me that the composite score on the PSAT was the sum of the reading and math score. Trusting her, I input my score as such and submitted my app. Now, almost a week after the app has been submitted, and she tells me that she was wrong. What should I do?!

If anyone is still following, I got the error ^ on my app corrected. All hope is not lost :)!

Good to hear that, @screamingpumpkin!
I was sort of disappointed to find that a bunch of other kids from my school applied. I’m barely in the top quarter of my class (at least as far as I know) so I’m pretty terrified at this point lol.

MIT historically does not divide apps by region in the applications to the college, not sure if OEOP does it any differently.

My counselor said that many summer camps and colleges look at how you compare to the rest of your class, but who knows, I guess.
