Yeah me too I think I’m the first to ever even hear about it from my school as I’m the only one on CC. People at my school don’t really apply for summer programs.

Are you guys applying to other summer programs other than mites?

@Nobody246 I completely forgot about the ACT! I’m taking it April 12. I should start studying for that…

@Ginnymills There are about 6 or 7 other people from my high school (Cypress Bay High) who applied to MITES. My high school is pretty big and usually sends one or two students to MITES, but it varies year to year.

@engineering2015 I applied to the Summer Science Program. What about you?

@emywemy610 Ahhhh ACTs that’s all I do for the weekends now…

I think there’s a couple of people applying from my high school over the years, but I only know one who went there two years ago. His brother and I are friends so that’s where I heard about MITES in the first place.

I applied to SSP too! I also applied to SIMR and I’m in the process of looking up for backup plans in case I don’t get accepted.

I’ve applied to a couple others but they all cost money and my family can’t afford to pay for any programs and I can’t find anyone to hire me so I’m praying I get in. Where you guys all from? I’m from Illinois.

I just looked up cypress bay so weird I used to live in broward county!

I was going to apply for SSP, but I totally forgot and missed the deadline. Is there anyone applying to the Questbridge College Prep Scholar Program?

I applied to the GWC internship at Iowa State, SAMS at CMU, and BoA Student Leaders. However, they all have acceptance rates lower than 10%… So that sucks. Have you guys been in any previous stem programs?

@Existentialized Oh yeah, questbridge applications are due tonight. I need to work on my essays.

@Nobody246 I actually did try to start a robotics club, but it never really took off unfortunately. On the plus side, there is a plan to start a robotics club next year that looks like it might actually go through (fingers crossed).

@JRez96 Do you know which robotics you all will be doing? (Like VEX, FTC, FRC, MATE)

I had an internship at Fermilab last summer. I am also finishing up my quest bridge application right now.

@Mathmaticious FIRST robotics I think.

@Ginnymills That’s crazy! Where did you live in Broward County??

Plantation? Fort Lauderdale? Idk one of the two.

@emywemy610

Hey guys, what are your dream colleges? Mine has been Stanford for quite a while. But after applying to MITES and knowing a lot more about the campus… MIT has begun to secretly grow onto me.

@Ginnymills Both of those are pretty close to me!
@Existentialized I’m not really trying to get into an ivy league school, I wouldn’t be able to afford it if I did get into one, which I probably wouldn’t be able to. My dream school is Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Both of my parents went there, both of my brothers go there, and my sister-in-law goes there. It’s pretty much expected for me to go there haha but I love the school so I don’t mind.

@Existentialized I had the chance to visit MIT for the first time last summer, and it was amazing. I attended one of the lectures on evolution, and talked to a grad student during the reception. She was really nice, and I was taken around the campus and had a little tour in where she worked. MIT would definitely be one of my top choices for college (if I were to be accepted), along with research universities like Harvard and Stanford. (Of course, there’s the financial thing that we all are very familiar about, but I know people with similar incomes as my family who get very handsome financial packages from these big unis with tons of endowment.)

@JRez96 Awww, well, I really hope that you can do Robotics in school next year! Oh, and I also applied for Questbridge–I had a fun time finishing that up last night.

Hey guys! I applied to MITES and I want to know what you guys think because I have a little dilemma that’s bugging me.

My stats are as follows:

Gay (I wrote about it in my essay), Latino immigrant (I was born in Chile to a Chilean mother and a Cuban father)

I’m on Student Council, Model UN, three-year varsity swimmer and I do lots of volunteer work

SAT: 2250 (730R, 800M, 730W)
ACT: 33 (35E, 33M, 33R, 31S)
PSAT: 223 (I don’t remember the individual scores)

This is where the problem lies:
GPA: 4.26 weighted and 3.67(I think, maybe a little lower) unweighted

I take the most challenging courses, but I don’t try very hard in school. It’s a problem, I know, but my grades are dragged down because of my laziness when it comes to homework. I get A’s on tests but then my homework grades are full of zeros. When they see my report card, they will see a lot of B’s and even one C (first semester of APUSH this year). However, I’m smart, I take the most challenging courses offered at my school, learn the material and score high on the tests. What will they think? Will they be thrown off by the contrast between my standardized test scores and my grades? Does MITES find it more desirable to have a strong work ethic or to naturally grasp onto the material easily?

Other inconsistencies between me and a lot of the other applicants is that I’m not low-income and my parents went to college. Also, Cubans are an over-represented minority, so I don’t know if I’m as “desirable” as, say, a 100% Central American.

Thanks in advance for the help guys, this page is really useful. I wish I would’ve found it sooner.

I just checked and my unweighted GPA is actually 3.61, not 3.67.
