MIT MITES Summer 2014

Hey everyone, yet another long time lurker! Only 1-2 more weeks, eh?
Anyways, I’m from VA, near the DC area.
@kmichelle LOL another Zelda fan! And I also have the special 3DS version too!
@luckstar888 It’s funny you mentioned RHIT because I’m touring the campus on Monday. So far, it seems very isolated from society…

If any of you like 2048 then you should check out 90071992547409920! I got up to 4096 and quit…

@luckstar888 WAIT. I’m from northwest Indiana too! …What if we know each other in real life? (And I’m taking AP Chem too… um.) This is pretty crazy!

I haven’t reached 2048 yet… But I have been playing the getMIT (and sometimes the Doctor Who) version and someday I will win. :)

There’s also a Doge version of 2048 lol. Much meme. Very wow.

And, for those who have a compulsion to frustrate themselves, 2048 for masochists! http://ehzhang.github.io/2048-hardcore/</a></p>

Hey guys
I was just wondering how many ppl apply to MITES every year? and what’s the acceptance rate?

@Apdenoatis I’m from Florida! It’s alright down here. The only good thing is the beach, which is awesome, so I guess it makes up for the hot, muggy, mosquito-filled air. I got interested in engineering/science when I took chemistry. I had taken biology the year before, but my teacher was terrible and make the class horrible so I didn’t enjoy it very much. I absolutely loved chemistry though. So that’s pretty much it. If I don’t get into MITES I’ll hike Mt. Nebo and Mt. Hood, visit my friend at college, go to a program called SOAR that I know I’ll get into for sure, and take classes at a local college.
@Sasora I love 2048! I play it way too much, and I have yet to win the game. Once I win I can stop playing haha

Hello guys  @emywemy610 I’m from Florida as well! (Miami specifically). I’ve been interested in Science, Engineering, Math, Technology my whole life pretty much. I guess I began with lego, toys in general, and drawing.
@Apdenoatis Mindstorms is really fun! I used to have my own set until I donated in 9th grade to my old school. @ahawkins what’s your team number? My friends and I started our own FRC team this year #5329 (I do mostly mechanical and design). Unfortunately we didn’t make it far at our regional because of Murphy’s law (everything was working beautifully before competition) but are super excited for next year!
I would really love to do MITES since it would be an amazing opportunity to meet great people like yourselves and make some great ( window.alert(“insert nerdy pun here.”); ) memories :).
If I don’t get accepted though I’ll probably take summer classes at MDC (our college nearby) and try to get some sort of engineering internship at FIU (our nearby university).
Also I’ve gotten 2048 and attempting 4096 (I’ve had 2048, 1024, 512, 256, 256 all on the same board D: ).
GOODLUCK EVERYONE!!! And hopefully a good chunk of us will be meeting each other this summer :3.

@thalamus According to MITES they receive about 1,500-2,000 applicants each year for just 80 spaces, that makes an acceptance rate of <4% since I think many more applied this year.

To be fair you have to take into account E2MIT (80 more spaces) and MOSTEC (100 spaces). That makes for 260 spots people can be accepted to.

I beat it the first day I played it lol. The trick is just to concentrate on putting your highest number on a corner and then aligning up the corresponding row or column so that the top number stays in the corner and you build towards it. Oh, and guys, just to calm any reminiscent speculation on the whole “Standard denial letter”, they do have computer issues. I received a denial notification WHILE I was still completing the application. They fixed it quickly. @emywemy, i’m also from Florida. I became interested in engineering just because I like problem solving so I just kind of had this natural curious to tinker and gravitated towards engineering, which in my opinion, is such a broad term that so to me it just embodies problem solving. As for my profile, my essays were pretty good except that I completely forgot to stress (or in that case, even mention…) the lack of engineering/science opportunities in my school. That is probably what is going to cost me acceptance.

@Sasora‌
Have fun touring RHIT, I agree that its very isolated d: It’s really male-oriented just saying, but have fun!

@Apdenoatis‌ Yeah, RHIT its not really well-known, but its program is very good if you’re aware of it. And my parents are the same way XD they believe when you go to college you’re also buying into the “brand”

@kmichelle‌ I just finished Skyward sword the other day! It’s AMAZING. and I just bought LoZ “A Link Between Worlds” yesterday. I cant wait to start it, it looks awesome.

@Nobody426‌ AHH that’s crazy, What if we go to the same school?! What town/city/county are you from??? Let’s not exchange schools, because I dont want anyone stalking us. lol. I’m from Lake County. and I do CrossCountry!

and how many people on here are girls and applied to MITES? I’m a girl and applied to MITES, but I’m asian, sooo yeah.

@emywemy610‌ dehhh hot weather is really not my thing. I’m not a beach person. :stuck_out_tongue: But you seem like you have an awesome summer planned out for you! I’ll probably be sitting at home studying XD

@Fredsterboard I played with LEGO all the time when I was little - still have all my sets! I was pretty into Bionicle and Mars Mission lol. And yes, I did get to mess with the Mindstorms but didn’t have my own set. I’m taking a Robotics course at school right now and we’re doing soldering with kits and everything, it’s great!
And lol Murphy’s law… best of luck to you next year. :)

@Greenwave2015 ah nice to know. And I guess we’ll all find out about decisions soon. I’m pretty screwed from the get-go because I’m already an Asian from a competitive and privileged district. ahh well

@luckystar888 RHIT probably has a pretty good program if it’s ranked so highly by US News, but I’m not positive the culture and all is really for me. I’m also an Asian girl, but I’m Taiwanese… I don’t know if it’d actually make a difference but who knows XD

@luckystar888 I’m a girl and I applied, if you couldn’t tell from my picture haha and I’m Cuban
@Greenwave2015 What part of Florida do you live in?

@luckystar888 Okay, I’m from Tippecanoe County… Oops, we’re still a bit far from each other! I’m also an asian female… Coincidence? I think not! Ahhhh anyway, I’m so glad for the warmer weather recently! This winter has been so brutal.

Hopefully MITES will be releasing its decisions in the coming week! You guys are all so awesome. :)

I’m from Illinois so the weather has been nice here too except snow is in the forecast for tomorrow!! Like what?!

What are all your hooks? (not your race and gender, obviously) but what have you done/do you do that makes you stand out? educational-wise, extra-curricular-wise, etc.

For me, I love coding… not sure if it’s a hook, but I don’t know many other people who are as passionate about computer science as I am…

I really want to learn more about computer science but I don’t have a capable computer at my house :frowning: @brown210 how did you learn coding? Through school, outside classes, or on your own?

I don’t really have anything…I created an organization though.

@Ginnymills‌ nahh… unfortunately, my school’s comp sci program is quite weak… I taught myself

I don’t have any hooks in the way of income or first child to go to college, etc. I’m mostly counting on my passion for education and my struggle (and subsequent triumph) with math.
