Guys… My application’s essays sound like they suck compared to your guy’s essays… And @Varanasi at least that’s 3 days earlier! The anticipation is killing me! UGH, I’m taking my ACT’s on April 23, so if I don’t get into MITES, it would really ruin my mojo ): and I’m taking the AP Chem test in May, so if I don’t get into MITES, I hope it doesnt mess with my concentration.

yikes, these essays sound AMAZING! Mine weren’t about anything extraordinary, but I felt that my voice was very sincere and honest. I tried to showcase my writing abilities, one of my few talents, and I spent my 6th essay talking about art. Hopefully it stands out to them that art and science are equally important to me; I think having a creative and artistic side gives me a different perspective in science.

What medium do you normally work with @ABnegative?

@Fredsterboard well I talked about art in all aspects… I can write, play an instrument, adequately draw, and work really well with clay:)

Will they see I’m taking AP Art? Do you think our counselors sent transcripts? And @ABnegative Ooooo, so you like ceramics? Does you school have an AP Art or AP Ceramics class?

MITES does see your transcripts.

@ABnegative I really like art, too, but I didn’t mention it in any of my essays. But I am in Art Honor Society… I prefer pencils and charcoal as my mediums, sometimes I do acrylic paintings and I really want to learn how to oil paint! I’ve worked on a pottery wheel before, but that was back in the eighth grade so it’s been a while.

I like art myself, I used to paint and draw a lot but now I do mostly photography. Here is my flickr If you guys want to check it out c:

So talented :)

I actually haven’t taken any AP art classes, but I opted to take ceramics instead of another AP class so my GPA is actually lower than it should be. My school is also super competitive so a slightly lower GPA unfortunately makes my rank fall, too. Nevertheless, as I mentioned in my essays, I don’t regret the decision.

@emywemy610 Aww, you should have mentioned it! It’s pretty much a given that we are all interested in science, I feel like the committee wants to hear what makes you different from every other applicant.

What I personally did was put that I do recreational photography, yearbook, Guitar/Music, Drawing/Design, and NHS on my list of ECs, that way I could at least indirectly mention my artistic side (I obviously put my officer positions and awards in science though in the awards/positions section). I’m in 14 clubs with school (7 officer positions) and do activities outside of school, but since I can’t mention it all I took the strategic approach in that part of the app.

Hey guys,

This discussion seems to have relaxed quite a bit :D

Just a brief outline of what my essays were about:

My interest in empiricism and scientific inquiry.

This nonprofit I founded to help with education around the world. It’s really become one of my passions.

Talked about how even though I’m not URM, I’ve still learned a lot from my cultural identity.

Spoke about my identity. It’s a personal challenge I’ve had to deal with a lot :P

Essentially futuristic science-y stuff :P

More about passion for science lol.

I hope they liked the essays though. Weren’t amazing, but I guess “aight”

Yes, they see your transcripts (pretty sure it was one of the requirements) and if it’s not listed in your transcript they had an option for you to add any classes that didn’t show up on your transcript. I myself never got involved with the arts much because I was never introduced to it by my parents or my school, though now I really regret that because I feel that being involved with the arts gives you a kind of 4th dimension in your perspective -_-. Fredster, your essays sound a lot like mine lol (even the moving when we were 8 years old and the transition…). The only one that differed was your bullying one vs my almost failing 3rd grade:P. Even your interactive projector thing is the same arena as my thought to video idea. It just surprised me how alike ours are lol:P.

That’s interesting to hear :). and it’s never too late for art. Just pick up a pencil and let your imagination flow.

Or draw shoes, shoes are fun to draw.

another fun thing, put splotches of paint on a piece of paper and blow up those splotches with firecrackers! :D

<a href=“Chaos | Something I made 3 years ago with splotches of paint… | Flickr”>https://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/bokehnator/13862298155/

@Fredsterboard I considered self-studying AP psyche but I flipped through a book and it seemed awfully boring and I rather distrusted a lot of it. Quoting Jung, “Anyone who wants to know the human psyche will learn next to nothing from experimental psychology. He would be better advised to abandon exact science… and wander with human heart through the world.” Or at least that’s my take on things.
I do (or rather, did) dabble in personality theory, especially MBTI and Enneagram, though their reliability is debatable. I haven’t looked into the Big Five yet but I will eventually lol.
Also congrats on 4096! XD

@ABnegative gaahhhh I actually really wanted to take ceramics, but alas, Asian parents. I have to take stat next year instead.

I’m feeling pretty worried that I left question #6 blank, augh. Such is life, I guess.

edit: I also draw! Just, uh, not well LOL

It doesn’t hurt you to leave 6 blank. It was only there for those who needed it.

I’m sure that’s the principle, but those who did fill out number 6 are likely to have an advantage… so if I don’t get hurt, I’m still behind lol.
