MIT MITES Summer 2014

for the sat subject tests, do they take 1/4 point off if you miss one? and no points off if you skip?

Yep.

@luckystar888 Yeah, we can totally be roommates! I’m just going to wait until the MITES decisions come out to really hand in any final forms… Hopefully we’d be roommate either way!

Ahhhh I dunno what SAT subject tests to take. I’m confident that I can get a 800 on Math II, but I’m torn between taking Chem, Bio, and Physics. I’ve been in physics only one year (as compared to the two years I’ve have had in Bio and Chem), but its curve is much, much more lenient… Thoughts?

Btw, would you guys happen to know where I can find some quality SAT subject test practice aside from the one provided by CollegeBoard? Thanks.

I’m feeling a 25th decision release…

@Nobody426 go to Barnes and Noble, grab a prep book, find a seat in the store and take the practice exams. You may want to do some research on which books are best for which subjects, though.

If you’re going into engineering, you should aim to do chem and physics, but it won’t make a huge difference if you do bio (I think.)

I am interested in getting a quick opinion from some fellow applicants for those of you who don’t mind. On my application I had to specify that I had recently (at the time) been notified that my school’s exam schedule ran a few days past the initiation of the MITES program and I would therefore be incapable of attending should I be given the opportunity to do so. I made it clear that I was still very interested in both E2 and MOSTEC but was apprehensive as I was unsure of whether or not the MITES app team would simply disregard my application as a whole. Do you believe I have not even been considered for any of the offered programs as a result of conflict even though this was completely out of my control? When final exam schedules were released I had already completed the application so I decided to send it in anyways.

@Nobody426 Barron makes very good study guides!

@Nobody426‌ YAY! And same here I’m waiting for MITES to actually reply to us so I can finalize my summer plans. And I agree, take Chem or Physics for your subject science test. I would say physics, but only if your comfortable with the topic; it doesn’t matter how lenient the curve is if you don’t know your stuff. I’m taking chem, because our class just finished all the chapters in the book, so I feel pretty solid. But I still need to look over organic chem since our class didn’t study for that since the AP test cut it out.

I’ve also heard Barron is very good; there’s a lot of information, which is good and I’ve heard that the practice tests are difficult, so they over prepare you. I have heard from many people that if you get a 700-750 on a Barron test, you’ll get an 800 on the real SAT Math 2 test. But I’ve also heard that there’s a lot of fluff in the information Barron teaches, like they add a lot of extra stuff.

I’ve heard Kaplan sucks, the tests are really inaccurate, and many have told me that they even tell you the incorrect answers. I’ve heard Princeton Review’s practice test are REALLY accurate, sometimes PR skimps on the info they teach, but PR’s tests are the best if you wanna see what types of questions will be on the tests.

For Chem, my AP teacher suggested the AP Chemistry Crash Course (REA). My teacher personally knows the guy who wrote the book, and he says that he’s very intelligent and my teacher even bought the book and HIGHLY recommends it, but that’s for the AP Chem test. If you want to know for SAT Chem, I suggest PR for practice tests, Barron’s for practice tests and information.

@AstroAero‌ I’m sure MITES wouldn’t disregard your application. I’m sure they considered you very carefully for MOSTEC or E2. If they did say they accepted you into MITES, is there anyway you can take your finals early? My school lets us take our finals early if we leave for summer vacation or anything.

@brown210‌ I’m feeling a 25th decision also… XD

@AstroAero I doubt they’d disregard your app completely - or at least doing so would be entirely against the purpose of the MITES/E2/MOSTEC programs. Dropping an email to the MITES staff prior to sending your application might have been a good idea, but decisions will be out in a few days, so hang tight, I guess.

@luckystar888 Unfortunately the exams that I am required to take are state exams and no junior can escape it. I take the most rigorous course load my school offers, which consists of mostly college level classes, but the one high school level class that I was forced to take as a co-requisite to one of my college classes (the alternative being to take the college class next year as opposed to at the same time) has a state exam which counts as the final exam. I’m up in the northeastern part of the country so our academic year ends later than a lot of schools. @Apdenoatis you make a good point. I certainly hope they have not but as you said, we will be informed shortly regarding decisions.
I appreciate both of your opinions! Thank you.

@luckystar888 I like how you made my meme your profile picture lol XD

How do you change your profile pic?

@emywemy610‌ Haha, thanks for putting the meme up! It made me laugh, and I thought if I saw this meme everyday before results come out, I might be a little less anxious!

@AstroAero‌ That’s unfortunate that you can’t take your finals early, but you did say you stated your situation in the MITES application, so I wouldn’t worry about it at all. As long as you made it clear why your tests couldn’t be moved to be taken early, I would have nothing to stress about. There shouldn’t be a problem at all! (:

@Fredsterboard‌ To change your Profile Pic, just click on your Username in the upper right corner, then click on the orange button that says “Edit Profile.” Then look at the left column and click on the link that says “Change My Picture.” Then browse and pick the picture you want from your computer. Just make sure you have already downloaded the picture you want onto your computer.

Got it! Thank you @luckystar888 :slight_smile:
I’m the one holding the guitar lol

By the way, this is a song for the math people on this page.
<a href=“Golden Ratio Song - Numberphile - YouTube”>Golden Ratio Song - Numberphile - YouTube;
also this one
<a href=“What Tau Sounds Like - YouTube”>What Tau Sounds Like - YouTube;
I don’t know who here agrees with me but I prefer tau over pi in mathematics. It makes math much more pure.
(I feel like a major nerd for have downloaded these songs xD)

@Fredsterboard‌ No problem! and I prefer tau, but my reasoning may be biased because that’s how you pronounce my last name XD but my last name is spelled Tao (please no one stalk me).

Hey guys, I’ve always wanted to do a “Random Question of the Day” kind of thing, soooo I wanna try it on this thread if you don’t mind. I’ll ask a question a day, so the time will pass faster (:

So I’ll start at square 1, suuuuper basic:

If you’re stuck on an island, what are 10 things you’d bring?

Realistic things?

 1. Multi-tool
 2. Lots of duct tape
 3. water filter
 4. steel wool
 5. 9 volt battery
 6. water bottle
 7. machete
 8. flare
 9. first aid kit
 10. rope

Idealistically

 1. a charged iphone 5s

Same stuff as Fredster^^. Though maybe a tent instead of a rope; though, you could use the duct tape to make a tent lol.

Idealistically:

 1. GPS + boat ;D

Pi all the way!!! Mostly because I already memorized the first 150 digits of it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I would bring a teleportation device to take me to the center of the nearest civilization.

I avoided saying tent because I felt like that was cheating @Greenwave2015 lol. To be fair though, a first aid kit would probably also be cheating.
