MIT MITES Summer 2014

Both. Any advice out there???

But isn’t MOSTEC online? Or are you talking about the time when the MOSTEC students meet for a week at MIT? And anyone else immediately click “yes” for going to MITES/E2?

@people who got accepted, what are some of your wow factors/SAT. I’m interested in what some of the things they look for might be.

lol @mills, YOU HAD to get MOSTEC. At least it’s a good excuse to pressure your parents into a new computer xD. Btw, congrats to everyone who got in

Rejected :(

Yes mostec is online. I have to go for a week though if I accept. The same week SES is running. Which is better for college apps? More prestigious??

@Greenwave2015‌ to be honest my standardized tests weren’t very strong. I had a PSAT of 185 and PLAN of 27. I think my essays did it, and my recommendations. Also I talked about how my parents were refugees from Vietnam and how I’m a first generation, and how we survived on building a Resturant. I think the 6th essay is what really did it for me. Also my ethnicity essay. My science recommendation was pretty awesome. My teacher likes me a lot. I really think it was the essays and the recs. but considering I did 5/6 essays the very last day and I got into E2, IM SO HAPPY

Congrats to everyone who made it in! You’re all so awesome, have fun! :D

My PSAT was 194 and I had pretty good recommendations (I think): they were from my AP Calc/Chem teachers. My essays were on point though, even though they were a little rushed. I only did 5 essays and managed to talk about the obstacles I have faced in trying to be a shining star of a student haha

Rejected :frowning: Congragulations to people who made it!

Hi everyone. I was also a lurking kid, I guess? I’ve been reading this conversation for a long time but never had the confidence to comment on anything. For all of the people I heard that have been accepted, congratulations! I was accepted to MITES, and I cried so hard when I saw my results. I can’t wait to meet some of you there in less than a month!

I had PSAT 189 and SAT 2070. I think my weakest point then was FORGETTING to talk about how my school has limited STEM opportunities and listing most of my activities as STEM (most of the clubs are very underfunded and under-developed though). My school has a strong IB/AP program and very affluent students, so on paper it looks like a privileged school, but the STEM opportunities are very lacking. I was going to do so in Essay 6 but I forgot because I did the last 2 essays at the last minute. I thought my essays were pretty darn strong, aside from the STEM thing. Just makes me mad because you guys sound like a lot like me (moved here when I was 8, trying to overcome real obstacles, ext).

What was your GPA? I had a 4.0 unweighted and what kind of classes did you take? And your ethnicity?

100% hispanic (born in foreign country and everything). 5.18 weighted (top 1% of county, my school doesn’t rank but I know I have the highest GPA). 3.96 unweighted.

AP World, Human, Calc, English, Econ, Computer Science . IB HL Math, English and ITGS; SL, Chem, Spanish, Econ. 5 Business Duel Enrollment Classes + Statistics. The rest of my classes were pre-ib, equivalent to honors.

To be honest, I didn’t really pound the fact that I wanted STEM. I talked a lot how I hoped MITES would help me find myself and learn about myself. What did you write for your academic/personal struggle? Your invention? and most important club?

I was really emotional in my essays because they were kinda last minute.

@Greenwave2015‌ haha same here. I was so confident on my essays and my grades are pretty much up to par with everyone else on here. + I’m also a first generation immigrant so I guess something must have been missing. I guess I didn’t take into account how nationwide this is since MIT is less than an hour drive from where I live. I was really looking forward to being a part of any of the programs too! :frowning: Still hopeful on getting into MIT though lol.

Yeah @l44v. I think we might have ‘overshot’ our stem opportunities. Most my clubs were STEM, and like I said on paper we look like a really good school (which we mostly are), but the STEM clubs/classes are very limited.

@lucky, I didn’t specify a single career but talked about finding out what direction I wanted to head into as well. Academic/Personal Struggle: moving here without the language and adjusting to the culture + parents never encouraged me to reach high, so i talked about how making up for that gap in my life has been difficult. Invention: device to convert your thoughts into video format. Club: Technology Student Association.

Hello guys! for us that were accepted to MOSTEC, I made us a facebook group here. <a href=“MOSTEC 2014 | Facebook”>https://www.facebook.com/groups/236319929894369/</a>
I’m excited to see you all and let’s have a great 6 months!
there’s a “facebook” in there

@bolkevlp Oh gosh, E2/MITES/MOSTEC kicked butt this year! E2 alone had at least 20 MIT acceptances, 7 Stanford acceptances, 5 Harvard acceptances, and loads of acceptances to places like Carnegie Mellon, Rice, Penn, Dartmouth,Williams, Brown, Berkeley, Duke, Air Force Academy, West Point… A Coca-Cola scholar and three Gates Millennium s

Also, today I was given a full ride merit scholarship to Berkeley, so I’m not sure if I’m going to CMU anymore XD
