@NYkids – sorry, you don’t know what you’re talking about. The decision to close the 2-year program was CAP21’s alone. The 2-year program was never partnered with Molloy College; the partnership was for the 4-year BFA only. The BFA program is alive and well, and in fact much improved, for both students and faculty, by Molloy College’s assumption of the program.
I do know what I am talking about. I lived through it. Molloy was biggest part of decision.
So sorry @NYkids, that sounds awful. What are you going to do now?
Being as the 2 year program at Cap21 has zero affiliation with Molloy I’m not sure how that is being brought back to Molloy. Cap21 would not be existing currently if it were not for molloy, it’s not as if Molloy wanted to destroy the 2 Year program…it just so happens molloy is now in ownership of Cap21 and since the 2 year program isn’t part of the B.F.A it just wasn’t possible to continue…
@NYkids , @BWAYWANNABE is correct…we both have students in the 4-year BFA program. i feel terrible for the kids who were already in the 2-year professional program, but please don’t blame Molloy - the former owners of CAP21 bailed on them, too. My D had many friends in the 2-year program and our hearts are broken for them.
For anyone out there considering the Molloy/CAP21 BFA program, please rest assured that the CAP21 faculty and facilities are the same. If anything, the program has gotten even better under the direction of the fabulous Henry Forte. As is described on my thread, the program has been enhanced. My D and her cohort worked like crazy this past semester… the full book musical they created in 6 weeks was nothing short of amazing, and there were two other shows as well. She came home for intercession exhausted but happy!
@EastchesterMom Thanks for sharing about your D’s experience in trying to do a minor in psychology. My D wants to minor in Communication Sciences and Disorders – Of course, IF she gets into the BFA program. She is a transfer student with 34 gen ed credits already (12 plus theater/dance/music credits from her first semester in another BFA program, but those won’t transfer). We’re hoping that with so many gen ed credits done, she might be able to do the 18 credits for the CSD minor. Thoughts?
@daughtersdreams - It’s a little outside my area of “expertise!” I strongly suggest you call Admissions and ask. They’re very friendly and will give you the straight story. Good luck…hope she gets in!
Another thought, @daughtersdreams – isn’t it ridiculous that the theater arts credits can’t be transferred? Acting 1 is Acting 1, right? But very few programs accept transfer credits in the theater arts stuff. They must do it to discourage transfers!
@EastchesterMom I’m sure they are not trying to discourage transfers at all. So far, all the colleges have been very positive about the transfer process.
I should not have made a blanket statement about colleges not accepting transfer credit for the core BFA courses. It really depends on the program and an evaluation of the student’s artistic placement. It’s also a matter of continuity. The Acting 1, 2, 3 and 4 courses will build upon each other as the student progresses through their program, so it’s best if they all have the same training from the beginning. There may be instances where a transfer student’s previous coursework is of similar content and caliber so that another college would accept it and place the student in the next level course.
However, in our case, I KNOW the program my daughter is coming from will not be up to the standards of those she’s trying to get into. She may still be able to transfer the credit in as elective work, but not as part of her major coursework.
@daughtersdreams- If your D gets in (I hope she does!), all Molloy students have to take a course called Core. This course is offered in the summer. I strongly recommend that your D take it then if possible to free up time for courses in her minor. Core was one of the obstacles to my D’s minor…I didn’t realize the summer was an option. Learn from our mistake!
@EastchesterMom I wonder if transfer students have to take “Core”. I’m assuming it’s a “how to do college without flunking out” sort of thing. So, maybe it would be waived since she’ll be sophomore transfer.
@daughtersdreams - Maybe; I didn’t think of that. But that’s really not what this course was about. It was about living and working in NYC. My D and most of the cohort took it last semester. Even though it killed her dream of a minor, D said it was the best class at Molloy…they went to museums, landmarks, etc…she loved it, and for the BFAs, it was useful as well as fun. The course you are thinking of is for freshmen, and I agree your D should not have to take that one.
@EastchesterMom That sounds like an amazing “course” and what a great idea to familiarize non-New Yorkers with the city. I’m sure my D would that class!
@daughtersdreams - you bet she will! This is the best BFA program anywhere for a reason! Keep us posted on you D’s status!
Has anyone heard from Molloy/CAP 21 for 2021 class acceptences yet? Still my number one choice above all so fingers crossed!! I’m from Ohio and had to do video submission so didn’t get to ask when I’d hear back–hopefully soon.
Fingers and toes crossed, @BroadwayK !
@daughtersdreams, may I ask why your daughter is looking to transfer out of the BFA program she is in (and which program)? We are new to all this (my dd is a junior) and I appreciate personal feedback on what people do not like about their programs.
Regarding transfers, like any college major, the course needs to be equivalent to the one the receiving school offers for them to grant credit. If (as you mentioned) the caliber of the course at the previous school is not as high, the incoming school may veto the transfer credit. Incidentally, I went to Molloy (not a theatre major, but their other ‘big’ program ). Came in with an associate’s degree + a few credits after that, and Molloy actually accepted the most transfer credits! But of course, CAP21 was not involved. If your dd can prove, in some way, that she has met the requirements of the first year courses, she may have a chance. Just remember though, if they don’t transfer, she will be in a cohort of freshmen (not that there’s really anything wrong with that).
Hi @DramaQueen219 The college she attended is not one that has ever been mentioned here and doesn’t appear on any lists of selective programs. It’s a very small, private, church-affiliated college in the south that is building a BFA program but is not yet accredited. On paper, the program looks very rigorous. But in reality, they do not have all elements in place yet and are severely understaffed for the number kids they admitted. So, it just wasn’t for a student who is serious about making theater a full-time career.
Molloy/CAP21 will most likely take all her gen ed credits earned through dual enrollment during high school and the ones she is taking at our community college now. Her fine arts credits may also transfer, but probably won’t count as credits within the MT major – just as electives. She will be considered a freshman in regards to the BFA program, but will be a sophomore in the eyes of the college admissions office.
Wish I could help with questions about transfers, but my D is in Class One – that’s an issue we didn’t have to deal with (and probably the only one). I don’t know if any Class 2 or 3 members are transfers. @CAP21Admissions – Ricky, can you please shed some light on the transfer process?
