Overrated In-State: Appalachian State, East Carolina (Two ****ty schools in the middle of nowhere that for some reason people actually want to go to.) Elon, it’s an ok school, but there’s nothing going there except the freaking theater department, lol.

Underrated In-State/Out of State: Davidson (One of the best LAC’s and is not well-recognized because it’s 20 miles out of Charlotte and in the South, and everyone just knows it because Stephen Curry went there)

Overrated Out of State: Duke. I used to be in love with this school when I lived with all my Jewish Friends on Long Island in NY, but now it just seems like a rich student’s paradise who got in because he did a drop more than someone else. People with 2400’s on SAT’s get rejected because they did 30 less service hours than the next guy. UNC-Chapel Hill because it’s so hard to get into compared to in-state applicants. I can hold a 3.5 GPA and a 2000 SAT and probably get in where as someone in NY holds a 3.8 GPA and a 2250 SAT and may not get in.

“Underrated: Florida International University, Rollins College, USF
All great locations, all completely underrated…ESPECIALLY FIU! FIU, located in Miami, is not only a beautiful campus, but its education is phenomenal. Along with great education, its facilities are top notch and many of the classes are relatively small. Campus wise, their is a large pool, grill, AND a beach volleyball court located at every single dorm building…WHO wouldnt want THAT?!”

I have a cousin and one sister that go to FIU and they can’t stand it. I don’t know if you’re Hispanic, but I’m not. They say they’ve students ask teachers questions in Spanish. It’s number 1 in the country in minority graduates but that is due to the high Hispanic population in FIU. I will admit that it is underrated since many people do not consider it when applying to schools, but in no way is it a good school in Florida. Florida State, Florida, and Miami are all MUCH better schools. I would put it on the same level as UCF and USF though.

Ryan82, UF, UCF, and USF all have a 65% caucasion percentile…I wouldn’t consider that very diverse either. On top of that, FIU’s acceptance rate is far lower than any of those schools. The only one that comes close to FIU’s 33% acceptance rate is UF’s 40% acceptance rate. FIU is only about 45 years old…compared to UF’s 150 Year backround. A little embarrasing that FIU is starting to dominate UF in the stats. Of course UF will always be a little higher…seeing as they have more than twice the amount of kids.

UF, completely overrated. Gainsville is a small town that is Gator crazy with nothing to do but watch a football or basketball game when the seasons roll by. Sure, it has a strong academic backround…But thats only because 50K + students attend UF…of course their stats will roll up. UF’s claim to fame: Football. And trust me, I live in Ocala…30 minutes away from Gainsville so I know a thing or two about Gator Nation.
USF: Horrible ratings. Sure, they have a lot of kids there, but doesnt mean its a nice school. and UCF, middle of NOWHERE! But, I believe UCF is better than UF in regards to academics. UCF is as new as FIU and will go far in the ratings in the years to come.

Pitcher9, I have heard fantastic things about Uconn. I hear its completely underrated. I almost applied their but decided its too far from my state. I have two good friends who go to Rensselar who tell me that they are not enjoying themselves. Nevertheless, I don’t know much about so I cant tell you whether it is underrated or not. Besides, with a 1/2 tuition merit scholarship, I wouldnt even think twice about choosing UConn over Rensselar.

What does everyone think of William and Mary? I just got accepted there

Regarding your quote “A little embarrasing that FIU is starting to dominate UF in the stats.”…dominate???..not even sure how to respond to that. You might want to begin by looking at the Common Data Sets for the schools. It really isn’t even close.

You appear to have an axe to grind is all I can conclude.

UF: WAY overrated. Only reason they have such high stats is because of their football team getting so much attention. In the middle of nowhere. Any Premed student should stay away.

FSF: City could be funner but it has a lot of opportunities. Academically the same as UF. Students like to believe their football team is better then UF’s but its not…

UCF: Too large of a Campus and to much of a party school but the Campuse is AMAZING! Academically a bit lower then FSU and UF except for engineering. Up and coming school.

USF: Not that great of a school but its getting a lot of attention lately because of its football team and is getting better.

FIU: Academics are a bit low. Campus is alright but can get boring. I should know I live 10 minutes away from it. Good Piano room and the weight room is always filled. Up and coming but the Spanish can get on peoples nerves. Only the most selective because its in the middle of Miami-Dade(largest district in Miami) which is in Miami(Largest City in Florida). Becoming more selective because of the amount of applicants but the average is still only 3.8 weighted. All of the people rejected tend to end up in Miami Dade.

rogracer, your article further concludes how incredibly boring Gainesville really is.

A valid point Tiger J, I can see now why FIU’s acceptance rate is so low. Nevertheless, I still believe it’s a great school. It has a lot of potential to be great. Their average GPA is only 3.8 weighted? Its my first year in Ocala so I am just getting an idea of how high or low average GPA’s are here in Florida. I can see just by being at my local high school that school is incredibly easy…at least in Ocala, that is. I used to go to an international school in Berlin, Germany, where the valedictorian (who just got into Cambridge University, UK…so not doing TOO bad lol) has a 3.8…so 3.8 was considered a miracle there. Is that not high in Florida?

Anybody who thinks FIU is even close to the same level is UF is delusional. Acceptance rates mean nothing without proper context. UIUC has near a 70% acceptance rate and is better than both UF and FIU.

Look at FIU’s incoming freshmen stats-The incoming Fall 2009 FIU freshman class had an average SAT score of 1157, a 26 ACT score and a 3.8 high school GPA-.

A 3.8 in Florida, the land of the inflated GPA’s, is pretty bad. UF’s median GPA was 4.1 - 4.4.

FRcopeland, you are in Germany, so I really doubt you have any perspective to how FLORIDIANS perceive UF. As a senior at a large Florida high school, I can honestly tell you that the student body perceives FIU as regional school on a level slightly lower than UCF.

That TigerJ said “Any Premed student should stay away.” conveys that he has no idea what he is talking about. Shands Hospital at UF is the best research and teaching hospital and florida. I plan to go pre-med and the University of Miami is the only medical school that is close.

As for FSU, I got accepted with a $10,000 scholarship with honors, and never considered going for a minute. I’m still waiting on UVA and Vandy, but I’ll likely end up at UF for financial reasons.

I understand the gator bashing though. Due to Florida’s weird demographics (high population, not a lot of good schools), UF rejects a lot of well qualified people.

Overrated: University of Washington Their graduate school is top notch but their ungraduate school is messy, no one ever decides to go there for the undergrad academics

They try rather too hard to prove they are the best, makes them just look overbearing and pompous

Underrated: Whitman College (Known as the best Liberal Arts School in the Northwest), Seattle University(Jesuit school up and coming), Washington State University (maybe its quality clouded by its party school reputation), and I’m sure there are more yet UW likes to hold on to most of the spotlight haha

^ Many people outside of CC think that. The language may be hyperbolic, but many of the basic statement’s are true, at least for the graduate level. Specifically, its business, medicine, and law schools are phenomenal.

Overrated: Penn State, Drexel, Allegheny, West Chester

Underrated: Penn (It is hard to grasp how truly amazing it really is), Pitt (huge up and coming public star), Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Temple (especially Honors)

Overrated: University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (everyone says its a great school/equivalent to UW-madison, but it is the complete opposite)
Underrated: marquette?

Depending on who you talk to, UGA is either heavily overrated or heavily underrated.

Example 1: when I visited UGA, one of my fellow prospies commented that she liked it because it was “strong in everything”…the counterexample being Emory, which is apparently only good at pre-med and pre-law.

Example 2: any of the legions of people who dismiss UGA out-of-hand as a “party school.”

people think it’s just a party school but its science and engineering programs are fantastic, especially physics

overrated: uc santa cruz

it’s really not that much better than riverside academically, the location is fantastic though

the big 4 aren’t overrated or underrated at all. stanford > berkeley > ucla > usc pretty clearly and most people recognize this. the claremont colleges are all pretty good and everyone who’s heard of them recognizes this.
