Most OVERrated and or UNDERrated Colleges in your State ?

NJ

Overrated:Princeton, Rutgers-New Brunswick , The College of New Jersey
Underrated:Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, Rider University,

North Carolina:

Over: dUNCe (too obvious), but Iā€™ll go with Elon. I donā€™t get why people are so high on this school. Plus, they have some suspect admission practices (granted it is a private school). My cousin got a scholarship to play a sport there, and she had borderline grades and SAT scores. Yet, I have a close friend who got rejected, and he was a three-sport athlete, ranked #2 in his class, great recs, lots of extra-curric. Also, I didnā€™t understand the whole situation with Cameron Lovelace. He was probably the best athlete in the state (pitcher on a State Championship baseball team, varsity qb, and probably the best point guard in the state). He accepted a basketball scholarship prior to his senior year. However, during football season of his senior year, he got a DUI, and Elon yanked his scholarship.

Under: North Carolina A&T

Please spare me all of the Jayhawks complaining ā€¦

Over: University of Kansas
Under: Wichita State University

First of all, you quoted me, not romanigypsyeyes. We both do come from the Plymouth area, but Iā€™m still in high school. I would prefer going to MSU over U of M, personally, but then again, I would much prefer going to, say, Swat or Pomona over either of them. I really donā€™t have much of an agenda. But obviously, you have not spent time with the Indian community and its endless Wayne State-worship.

And people definitely overestimate U of M engineering, business, and music. Maybe not, say, Kinesiology as muchā€¦

I do share some of romanigypsyeyesā€™s sentiments about how people view U of M here. I know many, many people who feel it would be a disgrace to their families if they went anywhere else. Some are only applying there. U of M is also notoriously inconsistent with financial aid.

^ Haha proletariat. Itā€™s true. In the Indian community at our hs, it was UMich or Wayne State. You had no other options. Period. It was so funny my senior year to see so many Indian kids mad about going to Wayne State because they didnā€™t get into U of M or they got a full ride at WSU.

And I still stand by what I said, I firmly believe that UMich is overrated. Give me all the statistics you want, I donā€™t care. I got into both, got 100% of both COAs paid for, and picked MSU with no hesitation, even though Iā€™ve been raised a UMich fan my whole life.

LOL @ the people who say drew, rider, and ramapo(isnt that a community college?) are underrated.

Evidence-based argument, in the hands of an MSU student. There you have it, folks. QED.

^ Never said it was an argument. The thread is about our OPINION of overrated and underrated schools. I, and many others, believe UMich is overrated. I donā€™t care to convince anyone. Good grief.

Overrated: UCLA (51,000 applications last year)
Underrated: Azusa Pacific University (I thought it was going to be busy, but the Honors Program is really good; Iā€™m having trouble keeping up)

Iā€™ll do two states:

NY State: I think the CUNY (City University of New York) schools are underated. If you are interested in studying in an urban environment, CUNY has several great campuses and is an amazing deal, in terms of tuition: Brooklyn College is a very nice campus, Hunter and City College are right in the heart of NYC. All the campuses have some great departments and they have been really trying to build up the science departments at all these schools. I hear that the campuses can be overcrowded (and Iā€™m sure there are other downsides to being a state school in a big city), but I think these colleges really get overlooked and hardly get discussed here on CC.

California: Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo. I also think that, depending on what you want to study, the community colleges and Cal State schools may be a great deal. Iā€™m at Berkeley but am considering taking a course at San Fran state next semester. Their urban studies department at SF State simply has a larger selection of undergraduate courses than we do at Cal! I also think that some of Californiaā€™s community colleges are simply stellar. The community college I went to (Santa Monica College) offered a larger selection of lower-division courses all in smaller classroom settings than many of the departments here at Berkeley! No kidding!

Also, if you are interested in California state politics, I canā€™t think of a better school to attend than Sacramento State, being right in the heart of Californiaā€™s capital. If you are religious, you shouldnā€™t overlook Pepperdine, either.

I think this is a great thread because there are so many great schools get overlooked in the race to apply to the 20-30 schools that typically top rankings.

OK, so youā€™re not into reason-based argumentation. Fine, letā€™s just go with naked subjective preference. I prefer Michigan over MSU; you prefer MSU over Michigan. There, weā€™re even. And what have we established by this exchange? Absolutely nothing. And what about the fact that, according to you, more Michigan residents prefer Michigan over MSU? Well, presumably their subjective preferences count equally with yours and mine. And if a preponderance of them point toward Michigan, thenā€”well, then, I guess it would be hard to say Michigan is ā€œoverratedā€ if more people prefer it and the standard weā€™re using is simple individual subjective preference, which I take it is the standard youā€™re proposing.

Look, the difference between your position and mine is that I can point to objective facts that support my ultimate claim. I say Michigan is a better school by a wide margin and can point to objective facts that support that claim. You say MSU is a better school becauseā€”well, because you, individually and based apparently on nothing more than your own subjective preference, facts be damned, feel itā€™s a better school. Which of these do you think others will find more persuasive? Which do you think most closely comports with standard definitions of ā€œoverrated,ā€ typically defined as ā€œrated more highly than it really isā€ā€”implying that there is, ultimately, some objective truth of the matter, and not just individual subjective preference?

Goodness, you really donā€™t get it do you? I am not here to argue with anyone. I stated my opinion, I have not argued with you, nor do I care to. I have said time and time again, it is my opinion and it is not going to change. I have no interest in debating you, and I have not done so. Why do you keep attacking what I am saying? I am not saying anything against Michigan, I think itā€™s a great school. I PERSONALLY think it is overrated. You seem to have an ego complex that Michigan is the greatest school ever, and thatā€™s fine. I am OK with your opinion, but please stop attacking what I am saying as though I am arguing with you, because I am doing nothing of the sort.

You must have a reading issue. I have said in nearly every post that TO ME MSU was a better choice. TO ME UMich is overrated (and I know people who feel the same way). TO ME it was better to go to MSU than UMich. TO ME, TO ME, TO ME, not to ANYONE else.

Well, I never said that, or anything close. Only that, objectively speaking, itā€™s a much better school than MSU.

QED

Virginia:

Underrated: University of Richmond

North Carolina:
Overrated: UNC
Underrated: NC State

Virginia:
Overrated: UVA
Underrated: JMU

ā€œThere is not a Conservative America or a Liberal America, there is only the United States of Americaā€- Barack Obama

Oh yeah, and Miami still sucks. The schoolā€™s rep is dropping like a lead brick.

Some thoughts on this thread:

-Just because a school is good does not mean that it is ā€œoverrated.ā€
-NYU isnā€™t overrated academically, itā€™s just popular.

PA

overrated- Penn State (everyone wants to go there !)

underrated- University of Pittsburg!!!

ā€œLOL @ the people who say drew, rider, and ramapo(isnt that a community college?) are underrated.ā€

Actually, Ramapo is definitely NOT a community college, and their admissions are getting tougher all the time. Some of their programs (Nursing for one) are extremely difficult to get into. Iā€™m not saying itā€™s over- or under-rated. Just that itā€™s not a community college in any shape, way or form. Honestly, I think compared to Rutgers and TCNJ, it might actually be a little under-rated.

Florida:

Overrated: University of Florida (I just donā€™t get it, but sigh, my kid wants to go there even though I find the cultish devotion shown by the alumni to be kind of creepy.)

Underrated: Florida State, South Florida, Rollins, New College
