most overrated/underrated college?

Underrated:MIT??? are you drunk??MIT is one of most prestigious universities in the world.. uchicago IMO very famous ...

Underrated: University of Pittsburgh

Overrated: Pennsylvania State University - University Park

I think both are good schools, but, I'd say their overall academics are not significantly different.

I do not see how Cornell is overrated at all. Of the seven undergrad schools, four are at the top of their respective fields (Architecture, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Industrial and Labor Relations and the Hotel School) and a fifth school, engineering, is the primier program of its kind in the Ivy League. Cornell is probably the only underrated ivy.

Overrated : school where
got rejected.
Underrated : school where

I got into both PSU and Pitt (honors actually for Pitt, but, PSU honors is unlikely)

It's just that Pitt gets a bum rap next to PSU...

But only within a certain subset of people. For example, a LOT of regular Americans have never heard of MIT or, if they have, think it is just a technical trade school just like ITT, DeVry, or Heald.

I know one girl who graduated with 2 master's degrees from MIT and went to work for the Harley Davidson motorcycle company headquartered in Milwaukee. A lot of workers there, especially the line operators, thought that MIT stood for the "Milwaukee Institute of Technology" and hence was just some low-level local technical trade school. True story.

Contrast that with Harvard. EVERYBODY has heard of Harvard. Those Harley line workers, I'm sure, have heard of Harvard. So I agree that Harvard is overhyped relative to MIT (or MIT is underhyped, depending on how you look at it).

Overrated: I feel that Georgetown, NYU, and Cornell are vastly overrated in the publics eye.

I know people who came to MIT thinking it was the Mathematical Institute of Technology, and others who kept on getting congratulated for getting into the Michigan Institute of Technology, people who though they weren't initials, but the school was simply called MIT (or Emeyetee maybe?), and others who were asked why they were going to a bad technical school when they seemed so smart.

MIT's not underrated, but it does have some humorous stories concerning its name.

lol. Ok, radix01, just making sure.

Sakky, that post is silly for a multitude of reasons…..

Overrated: Washington U St. Louis--it's all PR hype and rank manipulation

Underrated: Cornell

C'mon man! You can't leave us without a sample of these multitudinous reasons! I hate cliffhangers! I won't allow episodes of Lost at CC.com!

Overrated: NYU
underrated: Chicago, Cornell

Overrated: NYU, Harvard (don't get me wrong, a great school, but I think the assumption that anyone who goes here is a "genius" is wrong)
Underrated: Cornell, Tufts, Northwestern

just out of curiosity, how can chicago be underrated when its rank is #9???

chicago is underrated among the general populace
nyu is overrated but they do get some remarkable undergrads and they have some great masters programs
cornell is WAY overrated... WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY

Agree, Cornell is overrated. Just look how many they accept from IHS yearly and the quality of those students.

KK is a master of suspense. Hitchcock has nothing on him.

An old friend of mine is a Penn grad (B.A. was in something to do with poli-sci or international relations). The grammatical mistakes he makes in the letter that accompanies his Christmas card every year make me wonder if Penn is as great as most people assume it is.
