most overrated/underrated college?

I agree. How much "better" do you want Chicago?

schools i think that are overranked by usnews (by 5 or more places):
-chicago (not top 10)
-notre dame
-usc
-nyu
-hamilton (should be in the 20s with the rest of its peers)
-smith
-bryn mawr
-lafayette

schools that i think are underranked by usnews (by 5 or more places):
-brown (should be top 10)
-tufts
-binghamton
-temple
-connecticut college (should be top 30)
-reed (obviously)
-goucher

not familiar enough with the publics outside the east coast to rate them

Overrated - Harvard
Underrated - Univ. of Florida, Rice

Overrated -- Wake Forest, (admittedly, I don't know enough about this school to write this with authority, but I wonder why it ranks so highly--I mean, is this school really on par with Tufts?)
Underrated -- Bard College; St. Lawrence U; McGill

"Agree, Cornell is overrated. Just look how many they accept from IHS yearly and the quality of those students."

princeton does the exact same thing with Princeton HS, and a fellow CC'er from Princeton, NJ has confirmed this (they accept dozens of students who would normally not get in other than the fact that they went to Princeton high). Also, IHS is among the best high schools in upstate new york. Cornell prefers to keep good community relations with Ithaca High school and don't forget many students at IHS are sons/daughters of Cornell professors.

Cornell is certainly not overrated, especially considering the quality and breadth of programs offered, easily the most diverse in the ivy league.

Totally agree with Huskem and JuJu. That's why rankings are such a poor indicator of quality academics.

I agree. Bard is very underrated.

Underrated: University of Minnesota, University of Chicago
Overrated: Harvard

UConn is the most underrated university in the country. UConn should be at least 10 spots higher in the US News ranking.

to huskem and heaven, chicago is easily top 10, most likely top 5, possibly the best. just because you don't know anything about it doesn't mean it's overrated. Princeton Review agrees, for undergrad (which i believe this is generally about) it doesn't get much better than uchicago. grad schools are amazing, too, i should add.

Overrated: KK's sense of drama if he doesn't provide a climax pretty soon.

Overrated: People's ability to discern whether or not a college is overrated or underrated. How the hell do you KNOW?

Underrated: my ability to guzzle a 6-pack and then play "Oh Holy Night" on the accordion.

Chicago should be ranked higher than UPenn and Duke, that's for sure.
Brown and Northwestern should be above Cornell
and Emory is overrated

the only thing UChicago does that Duke and Penn don't is depress its kids....Chicago isn't better than either of them academically, and lacks alot in terms of fun and quality of life...just my opinion but I think most would agree

personal opinion, i dont think any school that has lower than a 1400 SAT average can be a top 15 school, that excludes JHU and Cornell

I Think Fordham University Is Underrated And Should Be Ranked Higher. Also, American University, Pepperdine University, COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY, UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND Are Underrated.

"Northwestern should be above Cornell"

I can see Brown maybe ... but certainly not Northwestern.

underrated: Bard
UChicago
Bates

overrated: Vanderbilt
Penn
NYU

These opinions are based on visits, current students, past students from my hs that went to these schools (their opinions and their calibur) and alumni that I know

gomestar, Northwestern has a higher SAT average than Cornell

even if you compare Cornell A/S to Northwestern TOTAL, Northwestern is the same or even higher

so idk what ur talking about, according to us news, both northwestern and brown have the same peer assess of 4.4, and so does dartmouth

so, ur comment is without merit

"I can see Brown maybe ... but certainly not Northwestern."

Yes, you would think that wouldn't you.

"Overrated: KK's sense of drama if he doesn't provide a climax pretty soon."

Sakky's entire post was ridiculous; anyone who reads it can see why.

no, they're pretty much identical, at least when comparing A&S at Cornell to A&S to NU (lets compare apples to apples here, capisci?). I believe the difference was around 10-20 points, and if you think that's a true difference (like some NU students on CC think), then you should probably re-evaluate how you rank colleges.

I think Cornell is above NU is pretty much every established ranking out there - even though we'll all agree that they all have their individual flaws, Cornell is consistently ranked higher.

"so idk what ur talking about, according to us news, both northwestern and brown have the same peer assess of 4.4, and so does dartmouth"

And Cornell's peer assessment score is higher than that. So, you're saying that NU and Brown should be ahead of Cornell - even though they both have lower peer assessment scores? What merits are you ranking this on?

my comment is without merit? Whose the scholar here saying that NU has a "higher SAT average than Cornell" and thus implying that it should be ranked higher despite the fact that Cornell has a much higher peer assessment score and Cornell outranks NU in pretty much every ranking out there.
