Mount Holyoke RD Waiting

I would love to come to the admitted students weekend, but I live in Germany and it’s really far away :frowning: I’ve heard that the college pays the travel expenses, but I don’t think for international students…

Possibly- I’m interested in going, but I have to wait to see if there are any conflicts first. Congrats to everyone who made it!

Hey,
I got in too. I’m not sure I will be able to go, because I received almost no financial aid… I have been scrambling to apply to all the local scholarships, but I don’t think that will cut it.
:(

looks like I’m in :D

as i understood they are sending out the emails today??(saturday)

They posted decisions last night on ISIS and I don’t think most of us got emails.

I don’t know, I got an email. It just told me to check ISIS though, not any decision information.

^^Same here. Email telling to check ISIS…before I logged in, I was mentally preparing myself for rejection and Viola! =D

MarieM did you get an email today? At what time? Its strange that I cant open my account now…

are they sending the letters randomly?

I never received an email. I logged in here and others had rec’d their decisions through ISIS so I went there and my decision was there.

I also did not receive any email. I just logged in to my ISIS account and got my decision. I was wait listed… Everything is gonna be great!!

i log in and it says ‘‘error: not a current applicant’’… SO weird! is anyone else having that problem? :(

Received the email last night that she could check her decision on-line. She’s “away” this semeseter so we’ve been a little out of the loop as far as watching for decisions, so it was a surprise to have her get it early - thought she’d hear something NEXT week. Really excited she was accepted - immediately got on the phone to her to give her the good news. We’ll have to take a hard look but, as generous as the financial aid was, not sure we can do it.

I was expecting a lower EFC based on what she has heard from other schools so far. Don’t know how Mount Holyoke figures it, but their EFC seems substantially higher what we are hearing from other schools - maybe it’s worth a call, but otherwise not sure we can do it. MHC requests the CSS Profile and my guess is there was something on there that said to them we could have more resources to put toward tuition than schools that didn’t ask for the CSS Profile thought.

My husband has a “defined benefit” pension, still, at his company (which is unusual these days) and I think the CSS they asked the “value” of the pension (which is really hard to put into hard numbers - given that you can’t access it - it’s sort of a hypothetical number, really)? All I know is that NONE of that “value” can be accessed for college expenses - just makes us look more solid financially, longterm, so maybe less deserving of financial aid now? I was a little surprised. We’ll have two in private college for the next three years and financial aid is a real factor in saying ‘yes’ to a school. As they determined it, MHC did meet her full need, but I’m not sure it’s enough. Shucks… so much to ponder.

Has anyone else had this same experience - that MHC seems to set a higher Expected Family Contribution than other schools they’ve heard from?

^ I have no other schools to compare Mount Holyoke’s fin aid to, at the moment, but what they are offering is much less than what my family had expected.

I would suggest (and many of my older sister’s friends have used this method) that you haggle with the financial office at MoHo. Let them know about the money you’ve gotten from other colleges and try to get them to match. If they are really paying the LOWEST of all schools, I think you might be able to retain more than you were offered.

Good luck. :)

Do you think MHC will offer more financial aid if I ask?

YES! ASK! I had the same level and when I asked they offered me more money!

Did they increase loans or grants?

Thank you for answering my question.
Do you also think they will change my spring admission to fall if I ask?
I got accepted for spring 2012, not fall.
What is the reason they accept student for spring next year?

Yes–we also see a remarkably high EFC (30k from parents alone) in MHC AID package just posted. A third higher than even another CSS school so far. Since our AGI is just about 72k, all I can figure is that we are A) expected to put nothing towards retirement during Ds college years B) use all our assets/savings up and C) add more mortgage to house. But I have email in to super nice FA staff who helped our non-trad family figure out forms to ask for clarification. Hope I become less confused at least!

We already have visit scheduled but now D doesn’t want to set foot there in case she likes it!

She has a full ride at a v small lesser known women’s college, so she is very lucky but she didn’t love the students at that school. And another west coast women’s college gave her 7k more than MHC in grant money as well as work study (none from MHC), cutting our costs quite a bit even without loans (and they don’t use CSS but use their own similar form). I’m just confused! I thought MHC had bigger endowment. I guess this is the the middle class squeeze families are experiencing at ivies and “prestige” schools everywhere. I hope poor students are getting a better deal than this. We are just lucky to have choices!

Oh–I did read up on institutional method (IM) for EFC on college board and they say right out that private loans are often expected to be part of EFC, that families can “rarely” meet EFC through income and assets alone. Ah.

Hope to hear from others about this!
