Since NYC is very very tight in parking, i wanted to know where students, along with their family, park? Is there a designated parking lot? What if the parking spaces next to the dorms are all taken up? Also, what if my family wants to come up to my room to help me unpack and stuff? Thanks

There are NO PARKING LOTS. The NYPD will block off certain streets, but other than that, it’s a free for all. Just unload and park far away from the dorm. They are welcome to come up to the room, but they need to park somewhere that’s legal.

You have to look for parking around. If you are lucky, you might find some parking in the streets that is free or METERED. I am not sure about the latter since it is Sunday. Generally, it is somewhat better odds of finding street parking on Sunday. But it depends on the neighborhood. BE SURE TO READ ALL THE STREET SIGNS BEFORE PARKING!

I was driving Friday and asked one garage near Founders how much parking would be for one hour. I was told $41! I ended up going up to sonny’s room for half an hour and paying $8 at a parking lot at the corner of 12th and Third Ave. It would have been $16 for one hour. This garage may jack up prices for move in day, who knows? Please be careful with garages. They have come on teaser rates for half an hour or however many hours, but there are conditions. So ask before parking.

Also, if you want to be prepared and be able to compare rates in the neighborhood, I would go to [Icon Parking Systems - Reservations, Information, Pricing](http://www.iconparking.com) Print out their rate quote for the garage you want and the hours you expect to be parked; they will honor the rate.

Street parking is free on Sunday. Just pay attention to the signs. Also, pay attention to signs where you are turning. We were recipients of a very pricey ticket near Union Square Park.

The Public Safety officers have blocked off a lane of traffic in front of each dorm for temporary unloading. At freshmen move-in, we unloaded, left one person on line with all of the stuff, our student checked in and after we (parents) parked the car, we waited some more on line. Sophomore year move-in was much more relaxed as students move in on various days of the week before class starts. Our student and sibling had moved everything up into the room before we returned from the parking garage.

Best of luck to you!
