Music

How is the Music 20A class? What are the tests like? Is there a lot of sight singing?

yup , a lot of sight-singing. You'll have a singing grade and music theory grade for your quizzes/exams, with the singing grade is worth 70%(at least for the class I took).
But I think they do give you a lot of time for developing your skill. So don't you worry.

HAHHAHAHAAAHAHAH

Did WILLIAM HUNG take the class?

Oh wow that's a lot of sight singing! Who was your professor btw? The professor teaching Music 20A 1st sem. is Dana, CL. OKay, so if you don't have what do you call it, perfect pitch (knowing what note is played just by hearing it) will you struggle? Hahaha when did William Hung graduate?

You do not need perfect pitch by any means to be able to get an A in the class. If you can read music, you're 3/4 of the way there. If you've had singing experience, you're pretty much set to breeze through the course.

Our good friend Mr. Hung never graduated. After he hit it big on American Idol, he took a semester off to tour/record, then discovered the burgeoning Hong Kong cinema scene, and is currently there filming and probably sleeping on a large pile of money.

Asians across the country have been trying for decades to get rid of these stupid Asian stereotypes and he comes along and ruins it all in one night. Good riddance, I say.

Lol props to Mr. Hung. ok sounds like a cool class :)

Hahah, I agree with pookdogg.

Though, I admire him as a good opportunist. He made a crapload of money in a short period of time. He did traded his dignity for all the money, however. AND, he brought back the Asian stereotype...

sorry for bringing back an old thread, but i was just wondering about this class. Is this a class for someone who has little to no prior music experience ? Is this basically a singing class ? What can a student expect to learn from 20A ?

My recommendation is that if you have no prior musical experience whatsoever, to NOT take the class. (I know, it's a beginners' class, but seriously, the GSIs, at least mine, moved so quickly as if everyone had prior experience.) Everyone who stays in the class at least some instrumental experience. The people who get A's usually have some experience vocally. The class is 70% sight singing, and all the exams are basically based off sight singing. My friend did not pass the class because he could not sing and did not have prior knowledge about music...I know that sounds scary considering it's a music 1 course, but it's true.

My S took Music 20A. He had no prior sight singing experience, but did have prior experience with the guitar and writing songs. He had a good experience in the class.

Ouch, that's scary. Can you take the class for a few weeks and then drop it ?

yes, you have up till the 5th week to drop any class (except for early-drop classes). but ya they call it "basic musicianship" but it's basically "intro to sight singing". i did well in the class cuz i already know my basic theory so all i had to focus on was the singing. if you have no musical experience at all, then there is a lot of basic stuff that they touch you really quickly...and i can imagine people struggling if they've never been exposed to that before. and also, professor dana doesn't teach that class...the gsi's teach. and some are better than others.
