my chances at Harvard?

So, I just submit my application and everything else is taken care of, right. I also had an on-campus interview, but I heard that these dont count.

BTW, maguo, I forgot to ask you another question. How does your school do weighted GPAs? I think yours is one of the biggest differences between weighted and unweighted GPAs I've ever seen.

I know that my weighted GPA is very misleading. Let me explain to you this complicate thing. As I mentioned previously, for my first three years of high school, we had a traditional four block/8 credit schedule. Each AP class (expect Human Geo) was two credits (full year). For each AP credit, you get .08 added onto your GPA and for each honors credit, you get .04 added. So for most AP classes, I got .16 added. However, to put this into perspective, my GPA is 5.84 and the next highest is at 5.29. There are actually three people between 5.28 and 5.29. Top ten percent in our class is 4.65, or somewhre around there.

Dude how is yours lower than mine because we have the same system and I have less APs ..I guess you get no grades for self study? I have like a 6.1672. However, last year in hillsborough county some girl in the IB program had a 7.64!!!!! DANG! She got into harvard...she was indian...had a high 1500 SAT and tons of IB classes...highest GPA in the county....dang!

I don't know. That kind of sucks. Have you taken a large number of honor classes out of school (online). I did get grades for my independent studies. And that Indian girl; she has absolutely no life. She probably went home and studied until twelve.

HOw abt international students,? do u have any idea? I am from Pakistan. My class fellow got into Harvard. with 1490 SATI ,. 1600/1600 SAT II.
Does anyone know what is the social work Harvard is looking for? what are the extra cirriculars they want

From what I know, international admissions is harder than general admissions. But, then I am not an officer. I think they want you to show initiative and dedication in your extracurriculars. The general consensus is that working your butt off in a hospital is the best.

well, at Andover (Phillips academy, a NE boarding prep), I take only two AP's and 4 regulars classes, and i usually have to wake up everyday at 3 to do my hw (we have lights-out at 11). I think it's the same in tj or other "difficult" schools. Well, they send a lot of guys to harvard, but if i'm not one of them, it's no use.

I'm thinking about pulling out.

Jeez, are you kidding me. Man, transfer to my school. Most kids don't do any homework whatsoever here.
We also have a girl in our class who's applying to Harvard. Do you think she has a better chance than I do? here are her stats, or at least estimates of them:

Mixed (Asian, African, Caucasian, Indian, don't ask) ethnicity
t-2 in our class. uw: 3.8 w: 5.29
SAT: 2100?
NMSF
APs: Biology: 4, Chemistry: 3 or 4?, World History: 5?, English Lang: 4 or 5; and Calc AB: 4.
Taking: US Gov, microecon, Phys B, Stat, European, English Lit, Psych.

She's been to just about everyone of those leadership conferences, I think 6 in total.

ECs
Key Club Prez(she's a hardcore key clubber; it's her life) 9-12
NHS treasurer 11,12
Mu Alpha Theta 11 only
Drama 10-12

Major Accomplishments
formed a program to promote science in middle schoolers (not very successful)
other things she doesn't tell us.

i'm just guessing. She doesn't like to tell us anything. Everything above is inferential but should be fairly accurate.
Well, everybody at our school hates her. She studies her butt off and has no life and is actually very stupid (IQ wise). Oh, and she's fat. Before the AP exam in World Hist, she copied the entire textbook by hand! We all hope she fails.

LOL sounds to me like she has more of a life then ya'll...Just a different kind. How does one define a life anyway? Friends? Fun? Activities? (Cause if you used any of those examples she probably has all 3 in her own world)

Yeah, I'd say she has a pretty decent shot.

Better than my shot?
She goes home and does homework or volunteers. Her friends are all gay and/or stupid. She doesn't sleep; just stays up and does homework. Nobody likes her at school.

You look about even - I say that because I suspect since she would be painting herself in a positive light she would have more to say.

The difference will be in who can write the better essays.

In the end, it's a crapshoot. Seriously.

She sounds like a workaholic, but some people like it that way. OUt of curiousity, how in the world do you know so much of her schedule?

And stupid is relative to your opinion - I suspect they are probably workaholics as well.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you enjoy working, if that's your passion, it should be respected as much as anything else, like football. I personally have a very hard time feeling respectful of people who spend their life crashing into eachother, but that doesn't mean that I should. It also doesn't mean that they are terrible people.

And if no one likes her, how does she have friends?

No offense, but those are some serious logial fallacies, hope they don't end up in the essays.

She has her friends, but they are weird. The general group of seniors don't like her at all. Last year, she was giving a speech for something (I don't remember) and she was booed off the stage. Her friends are just like her. I think that the general opinion is that she is not very smart at all; in class she doesn't understand anything, but only learnes things through rote memorization. I know all this from one of her few friends. Most of this stuff is pretty much a guess, but I'm sure I'm not off by too much.

Hey, manguo, we're alot alike... we don't spend like 5 hours a night studying, LOL. I just glance through my book (if I ever read it), read the first line of every paragraph, read whole paragraphs around bolded/italicized text, and I generally get A's. Hell, sometimes I don't even study! We rule!

"Her friends are all gay and/or stupid."

hahaha, rofl

Hey, it's ok to say if people hate her, and judging from your post, I'd say that you harbor some hate for her too.

But it's important to respect how people lead their lives. Just because she is fat, gay, studies a lot, whatever, shouldn't really affect YOUR chances. I mean, think about this. If she has a better chance than you, it's probably too late to do anything about it.

Also, everyone is different. She might have had some tough family problems as a kid and likes to keep to herself and doesn't trust anyone. Stuff like that. You really never know about people, so you know, lay off the flaming and try to look at people from a different point of view. I know it has helped me, and now I can see that it is better to just worry about yourself. If others want my advice, they come and ask because they respect that I give them space.

But yeah, even if the whole school hated her (excluding teachers), I don't believe there is a supplement on the Harvard app about "What percentage of students hate you?" ;)

Iit's also kind of pointless to compare stats. Remember that a little part of college apps involves luck, so you might get the lucky draw...or you may not. Either way, it's not the end of the world. I know of people like the girl you're talking about. We have a girl like that at our school, exactly like the girl you're referring to. Thing is, although she might have backstabbed her way to the top, I know she lacks what I have. She knows this too, so I don't spend time thinking about her, hating on her, but simply letting her prod me and waste her time asking me what my grades are, what my test scores are, etc. It's kinda funny too.

Because I just lie to her anyways :D

Wow, you guys are so judgemental!! I'm glad I don't go to your school, you'd probably label me just the same even though I don't consider myself fat, stupid, or gay...

Is she hot? Cause if she is, then she owns ALL of you.
