It’s an Arts school. Usually their merit awards are based on your portfolio presentation…not your academics.

@thumper1 no dude i talked to a lady and there are portfolio scholarships and academic ones…

What is your ACT composite score?

Did you ask the nice lady at SCAD where you could find the criteria for academic awards?

Does SCAD give much for academic merit? If so, how much? And how many awards do they give?

How much do you need?

What is your composite? 30?

where else are you applying for significant merit?

What is your unweighted gpa

SCAD offers merit (portfolio or performance resume), talent and academic all separately.
@qwc123 were you able to get an academic scholarship? I would really love to hear what your experience has been. My D2 is interested in SCAD and will apply very soon. Her SAT of 1960 puts her at about a 29 ACT, and her GPA (uw) is 3.64 so she’s not too far from your stats.
Well…qwc123 hasn’t been active in this OLD thread or anywhere else on CC since January. I doubt you will get a response.
This thread is less than a year old. Hardly “old” for an art school thread LOL. I’ve seen conversations beginning in 2005 get re-kindled.
But you may be correct but it’s always worth a shot.
If you click on qwc123’s name you’ll see @thumper1 is correct. The OP hasn’t been on CC since January.
@Mamelot I got a $10,000 academic scholarship, which was great! I “needed” more money to cover the cost of attendance, which is where need based aid came in, and I got selected for a process called verification. Verification is very long and drawn out by SCAD (moreso than other schools) because I know they really want a lot of the students money, which is why tuition is so damn high there. I will be attending in the fall, and their financial aid department has been less than satisfactory, but I’m dealing with it because I really do love the school. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Thank you for the info, @qwc123! This is very helpful to know and gives me a bit of hope as to affordability. And congrats, btw! What is your intended major?
We go out there end of next week for a visit and I’ll be sure to PM you if we have any questions afterward.
Good luck on your upcoming foundation year!
@Mamelot My intended major is film and television!
Another thing to consider is if you move off campus at some point, they take away part of your scholarship (not sure the exact percentages).
Also, my ACT stats changed a bit when I retook the exam @Mamelot … my current ACT composite score is a 32 (superscored). However, back when I first took the ACT and got a 28, an admissions advisor told me that my scores were “out of the water.”
@qwc123 that’s good to know. We’ll be sure to read the fine print.
Is your $10,000 scholarship applied to three or four quarters of tuition?
Edit/update: “out of the water” meaning very good or out of contention for a scholarship?
@Mamelot three quarters. Also, even though they hike up tuition every year, your scholarship stays the same and is not adjusted. As much as I love SCAD, I’ve been less than pleased with their finances. For example, at another school that I almost went to, the tuition would stay the same for all four years even if it was adjusted for incoming students. But at SCAD, you have to pay the new tuition amount.
@qwc123 thanks for this info. We are expecting that D2 will need to work to help pay for personal expenses and also to contribute to tuition differences. I haven’t seen any art schools guarantee a 4 year tuition rate but then - maybe we aren’t looking at the right set of art schools!
At least I can figure that she will get some money for academics. The net price calculator suggests $8,500 - $11,500 and she will be trying for a creative award as well (that one is less sure, however). She’s discussing all this with admissions next week. It will be a good opportunity for us to get an idea of affordability right up front. And I’m encouraging her to apply early so that she is more assured of any aid she qualifies for.
Thanks again for all your help!
Hi again @qwc123. My D2 was just accepted to SCAD so is very excited! The admission/enrollment packet arrived today but no mention of an academic award (I wasn’t expecting one to be offered so soon as it’s only September. The admissions rep at the school during our visit told her that they are sent in the mail but I’m not sure of the timing nor if they were issued separately from the acceptance packet. Do you recall when you applied and when you received your acceptance and notification of scholarship? Did it arrive separately from the admissions/enrollment info?
She is above the minimum GPA for merit aid and her SAT’s were pretty solid (1960 composite) so is not worried. I’m just wondering about timing. She’ll contact her admissions counsellor if she doesn’t hear anything more in the next couple weeks.
Hope your year is off to a great start - you are probably done with your foundation studios, correct?
@Mamelot Wow I’m so happy to hear she was accepted! Congratulations! In regards to scholarships, SCAD says it will be within two weeks that you hear, but in my experience it was just a little bit longer; my award arrived separately from my admissions packet. My academic and achievement scholarships arrived separately as well.
I’m loving SCAD so far–super happy with my decision! I just moved in on Friday and started foundation classes today actually.
