My Progress Thread - We Will Triumph

StevenToCollege and whitelillies

The previous administered tests are scattered everywhere on the internet.
If you google specific test name, you should be able to find some pdf files.
e.g. May 2012 sat pdf something like this.

I did Oct 2011 SAT yesterday.
-4 on CR, but it’s a lenient curve, 800
-1 Math, 780 (****)
-10 WR ( I am desperate ) 640
What is wrong with me…

@jeffisaboss: I think doing untimed tests are good once in a while! You get to actually focus on the material more closely and become one with it! haha I like to treat(?) myself to an untimed test every now and then ;)

@benjamin8451: 800 on CR!? Woo! Congratulations! I can only dream of being close to that score…
-

Mind if I join this thread? I’m planning on taking my first official SAT in November or December. I was initially planning to take it in October, but I’m still in that adjustment period of school, so Nov/Dec it is! I just hope I don’t catch a cold…

On practice tests (blue book) I got about 570~600 CR, 700~750W, and 700~750M. My dream score is to get a 2400, or as close to it as possible! But for now, I’m simply aiming for 2000+ but since its my first time, I’ll go easy on myself hahah ;_;

As for studying, I don’t have a schedule (shame on me) but I just do some practice tests here and there from the blue book and the PR book I bought (although theres some blatant errors in the PR book…) as well as using the mindsnacks SAT app for vocab and of course reading some delicious books! CR is definitely my weak point and from what I’ve seen on CC so far, it seems the only way to get better is to read and to practice
-

Looking forward to seeing/reading everyone’s progress on here! LET US ALL CONQUER THE SAT TOGETHER.

The only _______ on the flashy desert landscape was the occasional rock outcrop jutting skyward.
A. Regularity
B. relief
C. Symmetry
D. Vacancy
E. depression

I eliminated all the answer choices…

Any clue guys? This is from May Sunday 2011 SAT

is there any test(s) in blue book u guys think its hard?

@benjamin8451 - the answer is ‘relief’ - a term used in a geographic way also.

relief can be defined as -
the state of being clearly visible or obvious due to being accentuated in some way.

“the setting sun threw the snow-covered peaks into relief”
a temporary break

@whitelillies thanks!!!
I look it up in dictionary.
I have to admit that I don’t know the second meaning of relief.

Welcome Waffle!!!

A quick note:

Before posting questions, I think we should state where the question came from so people who haven’t done the tests won’t see the questions.

I just took a CR test and I feel my CR score declining. I missed a lot on this test.

I’m currently a bit disappointed and starting to lose confidence but I will persevere through and use this as a learning experience.

I don’t know the reason for this but I better figure it out fast.

Hi MedicalBoy,

Are you doing one practice test per day?
It might be a bit too much.
Try taking one day break in between.

StevenToCollege

No I haven’t. Its just I feel a bit jumbled on the CR and I don’t have the “grip” I used to have. I have done well in some CR tests in the past but recently I have been a bit off.

Hi MedicalBoy,

If it just happened to this test, I wouldn’t worry too much.
It might be that the passages were harder for this test.
Anyway, when you said you missed a lot, how many questions were you talking about?

StevenToCollege

I missed 10 questions which is utterly horrible for the amount of work I put into this. This was the January 2011 CR test which was a bit challenging and using their curve gave me a 670.

I’m currently going over my mistakes in detail and hopefully I’ll be able to figure out what went wrong and prevent it from happening again.

MedicalBoy
I wouldn’t really worry about that score. Figure out where went wrong.
I missed 6 questions on May 2011 Sunday’s test and got a perfect score on passages. But that still put me in a 720 score.

So I figured out I still need to keep rolling vocabularies. Not a big deal, take it as a chance to make progress.

Yea I missed two vocabulary questions and I’ve realized that my reading strategy is not not effective. After slowing down to understand the passage, it makes better sense. My reading now is a bit sloppy and cursory. I’m going to try and take it slow but I have to see how much time I can trade off.

Other than that, my writing is okay but I still need to practice my essay. Math is still not perfect but I’m still working on it.

In the end, it can all come down to the day or simply luck. That’s why I’m trying not to freak out and not let what I can’t control bother me.

Benjamin, I see you are in great condition all but writing. What are you doing to improve in that?

Is anyone else with is?

MedicalBoy
For writing, my problem is I get paranoid and rush on easy questions because I want to spare time for the hard ones. I usually miss several level 1 or 2 difficulty questions but get a perfect score on 4 or 5 questions. But I guess this strategy works against me.

I am still digesting Erica’s grammar book. I take two extra writing sections everyday, hope I can raise up to writing MC to -1 or -0. My ideal score for writing is high 700.

As for CR reading passages, my suggestion is know your pace really really well. Don’t worry about re-read certain paragraphs. I know this sounds counter-intuintive, but once you master your pace, you know exactly how much time you can allocate on certain passages. For example, couple questions I never refer back to the passage, I just know exactly what the author means. What I did is pause 2-5 second every time I finished a paragraph, accessed what I have read in my mind then proceeded to the next paragraph. And I repeated this process until I finished. It helps tremendously. After finish the passage, I know very well about author’s tone, the main idea, the primary purpose. So when it comes down to those type of questions, I always get the free point.

Develop your own pace!

Medicalboy, if you are having trouble with CR, you should check out Noitaraprep’s How to Attack the Critical Reading Section Effectively (or something close to that name). I used to have a lot of difficulty finishing the CR sections, but his method made me finish with plenty of time left to spare.

Hi benjamin8451 and MedicalBoy,

How do you guys keep motivated to take all of those practice tests? My son is so into his schoolwork that he doesn’t really focus on the questions when I ask him to take the practice tests.

StevenToCollege

^I have the same problem too. Instead of practicing for tests, I delve into school/college.
